Well ....since it's not the real ark of the covenant...nine times out of 10 its probably made from China like everything else...

Does the lid come off?

Yes. Just like the original, the Ark is the box and the lid, The Mercy Seat, comes off. I did take the lid off of mine, and fortunately, nothing came out like the Indianna Jones movie, so feel safe to touch it and open it and enjoy it.

what are the dimensions?

Unfortunately I cannot give the exact dimensions. Our house is being remodeled and everything is in boxes and packed away. It fit in the palm of my hand and so I could estimate that it was about five or six inches long. It was about three or four inches wide and was about three or four inches tall. The ratio was correct per the description in the Bible. I hope this helps. It is beautiful and I personally wished it had been larger, but large models were either too expensive or very costly to ship.
