Great book! Do not expect Tom Hanks
I read this book years ago (before the movie) and enjoyed the comedy aspect of the book. In fact I remember being disappointed in the movie thinking they got it ALL WRONG! (though, like the rest of the world-I’ve grown to love the movie, as well;)I decided to read it again (20-ish years later) and I was not disappointed!Do not expect the Tom Hanks version of Forrest!!!It is unfortunate that this book is overshadowed by the movie. The movie was obviously ‘inspired’ by the book-each is it’s own work of art. They really cannot and should not be compared. The book (written in first person through Forrest’s voice) is a compilation of outrageous (and mostly ridiculous) situations Forrest finds himself in. It is a comedy with heart as he meets memorable characters along the way. It’s an easy and fun read once you get past the phonetically written text/grammar-which is honestly part of the charm that brings Forrest to life.

Not sure what to think about this book.
Some folks may feel this book is interesting... Me, I struggled with it. I felt the same way about the movie. It is my personal preference. I can see why somebody would enjoy reading this. It could be that I just can't handle anyone calling someone an idiot, not even in one's self. The redeemable thing about this book for me is that it opens one's eyes to the 1960's time period of US issues as well as to some simple truths of life. Several times I grew tired of the stories Forrest told. I grew up with people much like the people in Forrest's life.I know this book could be funny by for some people. It just reminded me of the insensitivity people can have towards other people. I did enjoy the way Forest drew his own conclusions and revealed his intellectual talents even though the folks in Forrest's life and society in general tried to label him. It was great his character did not allow or accept other people's opinions to keep him from pursuing friendships and using his empathy when faced with hard times, which could be inspiring. Very well written.I found endearing moments in this book, a sweetness about life, humorous instances reminding me of a "Jerry Clower-type" storytelling. The characters in this book offered glimpses of humanity we can all relate to. They believable.

Separate the book from the movie
I am probably one of the few that read the book prior to seeing the movie. I really liked the book as it was very satirical and light. It’s written as if you are on the bench next to Forest and he’s telling you the stories of his exploits. It’s very clever and written in “Forest-speak”. I heard they were making a movie about it and I wondered “how the heck are they going to pull that off”? When I saw the movie I liked it but it was much more heavy handed than the book. It was very different and as such I was actually disappointed with it. I understand that Hollywood had to make it more serious and create a story line. Over time I have learned to really appreciate the movie because I am a huge Gary Sinise and Tom Hanks fan and on its own it’s very good....but very different from the book. It would be best to consider them separately as they cannot really be compared to each other. They are that different in my opinion. Both wonderful in their own unique way.

It's...forrest gump
I want to start this review by saying I absolutely love Forrest Gump (Movie) Tom Hanks as Forrest is a match made in heaven. The movie is amazing but the book...it exists I guess. This novel is pretty entertaining but it just gets repetitive. Forrest does something stupid then consequence. Then again and again. Forrest is stupid in the novel. Not the loveable Forrest Gump stupid. Just stupid. Should you read this book? Well it's a short read. Maybe watch the movie first.

So much better than the movie!
Don't expect what you saw in the movie. This is so much better! Entertaining, sad sometimes. It is very colorful and fun to visualize the various events. A very enjoyable read!

I love both of them
For fans of the Tom Hanks movie, be advised the movie was "inspired" by this book rather than being in lockstep with the book. I love both of them, by the way, and neither takes away anything from the other, which is rare in itself. Forrest is like a smarter version of Lil' Abner, if you remember that comic strip. Muscular, huge, strong as an ox, and smart enough to know he isn't very smart. The gentle nature and good heart infuse both the book and movie characters, but most comparisons end there. This is an all-out, raucous, hilarious romp of a book that is harder to put down than a bag of potato chips. There is pathos, but, unlike the film, it is always understated and is subservient at all times to the fast pace of the plot and the humor. It is truly unusual to find a book this enjoyable on its own merits and its own premise, which is virtually a celebration of life with all its joys and surprises and sorrows without sinking into a mire of didactic finger-wagging. In short, it's a delight not to be missed. And I can heartily recommend the sequel as well.... a book I did not know existed before I ordered this one and saw it promoted alongside. So, I not only got to re-visit the original book, which I remembered so fondly from reading it years ago, but also got to continue the Gump saga. What a deal!

Diferente do filme. Uma nova experiência.
Bastante diferente do filme. Embora o filme seja melhor e mais positivo, o livro tem alguns momentos únicos e muito engraçados.
