Changed my life!!
We eat about 10 times more sugar then we are supposed to. This upsets critical chemical balances that results in the body's inablity to efficiently absorb and retain vital mineral and vitamins. This further upsets the body's ability to effectively make the necessary hormones and enzymes we need. The result: The younger and healthier you are the longer you can stave off the big effect, but eventually whatever we are genetically weak at eg cancer, heart disease, arthritis, allergies, skin issues have a much greater chance of being manifested within the body. It makes sense, if we are low on the minerals, vitamins, hormones and enzymes, eventually the body breaks down - not to mention getting fat!I had severe allergies all year long. I was taking six meds, and still got worse every year. I decided to follow the book's suggestions.Result: I am off my meds and nearly allergy free. Only in worst times of the year I maybe have 10% of symptoms I used to (and with no meds!) Side benefit, I lost 23 pounds, I have oodles more energy and can think more clearly than I have in years.I just got rid of allergies, what if your genetic weakness is cancer or heart disease? It is a book very much worth reading and heeding.All the best; and wishing you a new you too.

Important information about sugar & mineral balance & diseases
This is an excellent book! Nowhere else have I think I have seen this clear explanation of sugar and its relation to the minerals in our body.She writes: "in the body, minerals rules over all other nutrients". Other nutrients like vitamins, proteins, enzymes, etc. require minerals to function properly. And also that there are 17 essential minerals. Which must be in balance with each other, illustrated by a "mineral wheel."Sugar disturbs this mineral balance, and disturbs body homeostasis. If some minerals are excreted, e.g. calcium, due to sugar - other minerals will be lost as well.This explains why high-carb diets cause e.g. osteoporosis, and why it doesn't matter how much calcium tablets we eat. It will just be excreted. It's the high carbs that cause the calcium excretion. Look e.g. at how sugar causes tooth decay.High-carb & high-sugar diets' mineral-unbalancing will cause enzyme-malfunctioning, which causes digestion-malfunctioning, especially protein digestion, which result in arthritis & many other diseases. This is only one of the many problems with sugar that the book describes.I find the information extremely valuable. I just re-read it when I want to be motivated to stay off sugar.Thanks Nancy Appleton - a great book!

Very informative
This book was recommended to me by an eating disorder therapist. It does have dated material and needs to be updated; however, the basic information is still true. Makes you very conscious of what you put in your mouth. Exactly what I needed.

Great Insights and Substance Presented in a Way that is easy to Understand, as well as Entertain
This book is fanastic and beyond insightful. Unlike the popular "Sugar Busters", Dr. Appleton's book is more sound and less sensational. But don't get me wrong, it's not boring or so fact-filled that it's hard to understand. On the contrary. She does a great job of keeping the reading connected and provides them with helpful insights into what sugar really does to the body, including sharing her own personal journey with such. And, she's not writing this to just dazzle and impress like Sugar Busters does. Much more substance and helpful info. I highly recommend it.

Excellent book
Needing to eliminate sugar in my diet, and this book motivates me to do so now that I see exactly how horrible sugar is for all of our bodies, especially those with autoimmune disease. Easy to read

One of the highest recommended books on this topic
I wanted a book to put things into perspective on the reality of sugar and it's harmful effects. This is the book to get. She really knows her stuff, and a lot of the information was eye-opening. Like most who would search for a book of this type, I am one who overindulges in sugar. I usually cannot change such habits until I get a little perspective, and this book will give you that. My mom was also searching for this type of book, and separately from me, she was referred to this one. From all of the reviews I've read on various "sugar books" prior to purchasing this one, L.T.S.H. seems to be the standard. The fact that my mom was referred to it also makes me think that.

Excellent book!
This book really changed my thinking about sugar. I had been a sugarholic all of my life. I hated how I craved sugar constantly and how I felt after eating it. Nancy Appleton's book is an answer to my prayers! After reading this book, I have lost 22 lbs, and I have so much more energy. I have not had a cold in five months. I do not count calories, I look at the sugar grams. I have also started eating more fruits and vegetables. Nancy Appleton's book should be required reading for every teenager, especially girls.

Must Have!!!
Amazing book. Must read for anyone who eats sugar and carbohydrates in general, which is pretty much everyone. I've given it to so many people and it helped them understand what sugar is doing to their body. Through understanding people can be more at cause over their health care problems. Education is key to a healthier life and this book is a must for anyone wanting to take control of their health.

motivating and inspiring
I have read many books on the ill effects of sugar . So I was already sugar free except for binging on sweets that too only home made on festive occasions and birthdays and anniversaries (averaging to once a month).But I had already noticed the difference that going sugar free makes to my health and appearance. When I came across this book mentioned on one of the various health forums of which I am a member I bought it itcto motivate me to leave whatever little sugar I was still consuming . And the book did just that. It gave me the last push needed to kick it for good. It is inspiring and interesting.
