Full featured dev board, but I couldn't get everything to work
This dev board is packed with impressive features like a bright touchscreen and onboard audio, and the initial demo runs beautifully right out of the box. However, I ran into issues with serial communication (fixed by skipping the USB hub) and struggled with manually installing the custom libraries required to get more advanced demos running. The documentation is solid, but some example code relies on methods or classes that appear missing or undefined, and I haven’t received support after submitting an issue. It’s a powerful board with lots of potential, but be prepared for a steeper learning curve and some troubleshooting.

Full featured dev board, but I couldn't get everything to work
his seems to be a really great development board, but I've had issues. Some of them are my own fault, which I'll briefly describe in case it's useful. My first problem is that I could not get reliable serial communication with the module. It turns out I was connecting via a usb hub, and when I plugged directly into the pc those issues went away. It took an afternoon to resolve this. Second, the libraries are nearly all custom libraries that have to be installed manually. I'm a little rusty with using Arduinos, especially manually installing libraries, so I had problems. I think I finally have them properly installed now. Once all that was resolved I could get hello-world up and running with no problem. The wiki for this board is quite good. Find it at www dot waveshare dot com. It has detailed help on getting started. Unfortunately, this was the end of my good fortune. I had no luck running any of their other demos, which show how to use the interesting features of this dev board. The main problem is that many of them use their custom Arduino_GFX_Library. Example programs use the Arduino_SH8601 class and the Display_Brightness method, neither of which seems to be defined in the library. I'm not enough of a programmer to figure out what's going on, so I'm stuck. The wiki has a handy place to submit issues, and I submitted my problem, but haven't heard back. Anyway, how to give this a rating? It could be that I still haven't correctly installed the libraries. Or it could be there's an issue with their example code. When you first plug the dev board in, it runs a very impressive demo showing the capabilities of the touch screen and the output audio over the built-in speaker (it's annoyingly loud). I would give it 5 stars based on it's impressive set of features. But I'll give it 4 stars since I couldn't really get it to work with the demo programs

really great as a fun dev board for new projects, this was very helpful and the formfactor really helped me picture what i wanted to build and fit more into it.

I was searching for a development board that moved beyond basic LEDs and displays, something capable of handling rich user interfaces and more complex interactions. The combination of a vibrant AMOLED screen, a powerful dual-core processor, and integrated audio features on a single board presented a compelling platform for advanced projects. Its advertised support for local AI and speech recognition sealed my decision to try it. The screen is the immediate standout; the color saturation, contrast, and pixel density are exceptional, rendering graphics and text with a clarity I hadn't experienced on other embedded devices. The touch response is accurate and smooth, making it feel responsive. Setting up the development environment required navigating some newer libraries, but the effort was rewarded with the ability to create prototypes that feel polished and professional. The onboard microphone and audio codec work well for capturing voice input for the on-device speech recognition commands. This board feels less like a simple microcontroller and more like the brain of a finished commercial product. It has effectively shifted my prototyping process, allowing me to design with a high-quality interface in mind from the very start. The capability to process speech directly on the device, without a constant cloud connection, opens up fascinating possibilities for responsive and private smart device applications. Pros: - Exceptionally bright and sharp AMOLED display with excellent touch sensitivity - Significant processing power for complex applications and graphics - On-device speech recognition is fast and enhances project possibilities - Integrated audio hardware simplifies adding sound to projects Cons: - Has a steeper learning curve compared to simpler microcontroller boards - Power consumption is higher, making battery-powered designs more complex - Requires familiarity with specific frameworks to unlock its full potential
