Life of a true woodsman
I found this book externally educational. The importance of lumber and how it was brought to market is astounding. The determination of the men who worked in the forests is hard to believe. Tough and hard-working as anyone I've read of. Great read.

fun read
I got this book because I'm a fan of the Ax Men show and wanted to read a bit more about the industry. This book covers the early industry and workers and is filled with a lot of great stories. It doesn't seem like it would be a fun topic or history, but Mr. Pike's writing style is lively and the characters that logged the New England woods are even livelier. I was pleasantly surprised and would definitely recommend the book.

Interesting history
Tall Trees is an interesting collection of anecdotes from a lost bit of history--when log drives were part of a big industry in the north country. The book was a gift, based on my enjoyment of another of Pike's books on the logging industry, and I found that I learned much from reading it, about a rough and ready time in our history. Mr. Pike was an excellent writer. . . I found I particularly enjoyed his books, since I have visited one of the areas he speaks of in the books, the beautiful Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.

A journey into an amazing, forgotten world
This is a unique book, both in its tone and its subject matter. To read it is to inhabit, briefly, a time and place that no longer exists in any way - and to see, up close, the hard, elemental life that created the America we take for granted.

Great book which fills in the gaps in my knowledge ...
Great book which fills in the gaps in my knowledge of trees that I see planted extensively in Turin where I live - unless that is I am confusing Weymouth (or White pine) and Macedonian pines!

Excellent book, very funny and informative
Excellent book, very funny and informative. Great for anyone that wants to learn anything about the North American logging industry from a personal standpoint. Not recommended as a scholarly resource. Book arrived in the pristinest of conditions, still had that new book smell. Makes a great gift for the family history nut.
