Completed in 1482, Johannes Lecküchner's Art of Combat with the "Langes Messer" ( Messerfechtkunst ) is among the most important documents on the combat arts of the Middle Ages. The Messer was a single-edged, one-handed utility sword peculiar to central Europe, but Lecküchner's techniques apply to cut-and-thrust swords in general: not only is this treatise the single most substantial work on the use of one-handed swords to survive from this period, but it is the most detailed explanation of the two-handed sword techniques of the German "Liechtenauer" school dating back to the 1300s. Lecküchner's lavish manuscript consists of over four hundred illustrations with explanatory text, in which the author, a parish priest, rings the changes on bladework, deceits, and grappling, with techniques ranging from life-or-death escapes from an armed assailant to slapstick moves designed to please the crowd in public fencing matches. This translation, complete with all illustrations from the manuscript, makes the treatise accessible for the first time since the author's untimely death less than a year after its completion left his major work to be lost for generations. An extensive introduction, notes, and glossary analyze and contextualize the work and clarify its technical content. JEFFREY L. FORGENG is curator of Arms and Armor and Medieval Art at the Worcester Art Museum, and teaches as Adjunct Professor of History at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Review: Great book! - Great, easy to read translations. Review: Great book - Good book, but you have to understand that it is a translation of the original text, complete with the quirks in digesting it that that entails. Make use of the glossary, inspect the text and images closely. Reading it alongside video interpretations you can find on YouTube works pretty well.

Quite comprehensive compare to other messer sources
My club use this book. It is indeed hard to read so I would say read as a group. Later on when you look at other messer sources it might be worthwhile to reference back to this one.

The gold standard for Lekuchner's messerfechten
This is the best translation yet for Lekuchner's messer. It's a primary source, so do not expect anything but a faithful translation of the 15th century text. The author offers no interpretation, and that's a very good thing - this is a primary source on the langes messer made available to an English speaking audience and it's offered without apology or compromise. Forgeng has done an excellent job here.

Very detailed
A very interested read, but I found I struggled as am amature Sword fighter to effectively grasped the explanations. But it's very detailed and something I'll definitely come back to.

Solid content, but hard to read
It's a decent book as long as you just want to know about Leckuchner's sytem. Otherwise it's not a good book, and not worth the price. Though it's really informational, its design is really bad. Images are small and only in Black & White with very little contrast; spaces between pages are largely wasted; types are squeezed together in big paragraphs...It's a painful process to just read the book. Also, this book is only a translation of Leckucher's original manuscript, as it doesn't come with some modern interpretations of each techniques which made it hard to understand. It's worth notice that a lot of terminologies are used in this book. Though they appear quite frequently in the modern HEMA systems regarding German school of fencing, it would still be very hard to read and understand this book if the reader doesn't familiar with German school of fencing or HEMA.

Messer technics
What a book containing illustrations from the original about fighting with a Messer (a sword that was called a knife to get around a legal loophole). There are 100s of technics to be interpreted and practiced.

Odered for a Good Friend's Birthday
and he was chuffed to bits with it! apparently Hans Lecküchner was one of the most knowledgable and skilled Historical European Martial Art's Masters of his time, and this work by him is unprecedented in it scope and detail compared to his contemporaries. If you're into studding H.E.M.A, this book comes recomeneded.
