How to Behave So Your Dog Behaves

Smart, easy to read, fun, and important
Good owners make good dogs. Sophia Yin is a genius at people training for dog training. For example, dogs don't just "Sit!" They "say please by sitting." Yes!Wish I had read Sophia Yin's book 13 years ago. My favorite dog is smart, loyal, our best herd dog ever, and my service dog.But we never socialized her properly. My mistake. Just because I don't like to socialize, doesn't mean my pup should stay home all the time, with just family and farm. It can lead to overprotectiveness and even biting. So the next pup will go to lots of events and meet lots of strangers and get lots of reward for that, so it's fun. And she will be safer. Also grateful for Sophia Yin's "Small animal veterinary nerdbook."

Cesar Has Nothing on Dr Yin
I am 100% satisfied with this dog training book. I don't understand why it's not more popular. I'm using Dr. Yin's techniques and they're working on my problematic, but improving, rescue dog. If you want a dog training book that is written by a true expert and utilizes evidence-based techniques, rather than opinion and conjecture, this one is perfect. What are evidenced-based techniques? Techniques tested by scientists in enough trials to determine which perform the best. Full disclosure, I'm a scientist, but animal training is not my specialty. I do have free access to all of those dry scientific manuscripts that hide behind paywalls to the tune of $35 per article. I've read several of them, and I can't find one published in the last 10 years indicating that punishment is a superior training technique.I grew up with a dog and we had a choke chain for her. I had a dog in the past 10 years, and I used a choke chain. For my present rescue dog, I considered trying an e-collar. It's really hard to find good information on training your dog because there's so much information out there and you need no training or credentials to be a dog trainer. Example 1: Cesar Millan. Sure, his techniques work, but they don't work as well as those outlined by Dr. Yin. Punishing your dog by poking is easy, but it is more likely to cause additional problems than just removing your dog from the situation and working them up to handing the situation better in the first place. If you don't like the idea of choke chains, e-collars, prong collars, poking and shushing your dog to make them behave well, then this is the book for you. Punishment is administered by withholding your attention. If a dog is misbehaving, you remove the dog from the situation. If you do want to use punishment, you can still learn how to properly use rewards from this book.I like this book because it's easy to identify a chapter to address an issue, then flip to that chapter and easily find the meat. By meat, I mean the part about actually training your dog. Sure, each chapter begins with a few paragraphs that set the mood for those who read dog training books for entertainment, but I generally skip over that. I use this book as a resource, and it's good for that. I also like that it's written by an accomplished scientist, and that I can trust the content. Lastly, the ultimate goal is to wean your dog off the treats and several strategies are provided to accomplish this.I'd be remiss in not pointing out that Dr. Yin's demonstration videos on youtube help and fit well with the book. Additionally, the Treat & Train manual is a cliff notes version of this book.

Great Book, Horrible Font for Reading
I must start by saying this is a very good book, with wonderful information and illustrations. Parts of it were a little over my head, but only an inch or so. Normally I'd give it a 4-5 star rating.HOWEVER, the font the printer used is difficult to read, especially if you have "reading glasses" eyes. Oh, the eye strain! Reading a 260 page book with reading glasses AND a magnifying glass does not make for easy or fun reading. There's a reason why Times New Roman is such a common font, it's readable.I did order the Kindle version to read on my Android phone, because I felt the information was so worthwhile. B&N doesn't have this book in the nook format.Paying double for one book? Uh, frankly, not so great. I'd recommend this book highly for the information included ---- except for the crummy font.

Excellent Basic Dog Training Book
I've been working to increase my dog training skills for over a year now: I've taken classes, worked one on one with trainers, and read at least a dozen books (so far!). I kept wondering though, what book would I recommend to someone who had just gotten a new dog and knew nothing about training? As much good information I had gleaned from other texts, none of them I really felt had a good comprehensive approach to setting your dog up for success with basic training and management information. This book does all that! It has become my new favorite for that piece of doggy info.In addition to being clear and concise, as a bonus, the book is also really well written. She bases her techniques in the science of learning theory, and rather than skipping that information- she gives it to the reader in easily manageable pieces and clear language. The reader (at least I didn't) need never feel "out of their depth".I would highly recommend this book to dog owners looking for an all around good dog training manual. Of course there are other books to go to from here, but this is an excellent place to start.

Practical Guide for Training Your Dog
The book is well written and laid out. Clear colourful and large headings are a big help. The examples show practical experience with training dogs.Would be great if you read the book and dedicated training your puppy. If you are getting the book after you have your dog a while the methods will still work - though there is old behaviours that will come out from time to time.As an old dog trainer I pike the new methods of training. They work far better than the ld methods.

Dr Yin's brilliant!
This is really useful stuff if you want to learn how to properly communicate with your dog, and establish good routines and practices for life. Most importantly, these are dog-friendly practices - none of that miserable (and completely unnecessary) fear/punishment/be dominant training rubbish. Humane, kind, and, even better, thoroughly effective and simply taught here!

Excellent
