Highly recommended if you're a fan of Gateway for the story more than the writing style.
Not as good as Gateway, but what sequel is ever as good? If you're a Gateway fan, you're going to love this book. It's far more about the story in this case than the writing. Gateway had a very interesting alternating chapter layout, and I can't say the writing style is a masterpiece, but the story absolutely is. I think it's better than Gateway on the content. The author is clearly one of the best sci-fi writers, but compared to all genres I'd give him a 7 or 8, where as Gateway was a 10 on the writing. I do cringe every time Pohl uses the adjective "expertly" but maybe that's just me. It's probably because he used it excessively in one of his other books. I immediately started reading the next book in the series after finishing this one, I just want to know what happens to Robinette and Wan and Albert Einstein and S Ya and most of all Klara.

my first Pohl book
It was an enjoyable book with a modest tempo but grand scope. The Heechee are an interesting idea that probes some basic human questions. I am a fan of most masters of the genre and am getting around to reading some that I have never read. I will read another Pohl book having read much of Asimov, Herbert, Heinlein, Niven, etc.

Wow ~ just WOW
I came across this book by chance. I have enjoyed SF gently for nearly 60 years and don’t read so much now I am astounded at Mr. Poul’s ability to combine what must be a deep understanding of much current scientific knowledge and to extrapolate that into highly complex yet believable futures. It’s almost hard for me to remember that this is a work of fiction.Stupendous ~ your loss if you miss it.Oh BTW ~ it stands on its own. No need to read the earlier or subsequent books ~ although I will now (and normally I avoid serials like the plague).

Typical Pohl Greatness
I've reread this series a few times now and each time I like it even more. Pohl is such a good storyteller and takes you on a wonderful, exciting journey that you will never forget.

Quite a nice sequel to "Gateway"
Quite a nice sequel to "Gateway". Compared to "Gateway", this book has much more adventure, action, answers more questions. However, I missed that deeply touching drama of human condition that was present in the first book. "Gateway" had that unique strangely depressing feeling, mixed with surprise and disgust. No other book managed to make me feel like "Gateway" did. And "Beyond the Blue Event Horizon" is simply a normal and cool SciFi book.

Amazing drop off from Gateway to this.
First off it may be unfair to compare this work to Gateway which is awesome and a must read. But they are a series so I shall. First the good. Great world building, we spend more time on earth and see where Pohl sees us headed and amazing foresight on his part though he sees earth' s decline happening more rapidly than it is actually occurring but hey it was the eighties. Unfortunately the story seems to me to be acting like just a bridge to get to a more interesting story that he wants to tell later and works to clean up "realities" that make writing hard sci fi difficult. Like needing FTL travel, FTL communication, and needing rapid computational evolution to handle other obstacles beyond human capabilities. What is amazing is the similarities between his and Arthur C. Clarke's work. If the next book Rendezvous becomes much like the Rendezvous with Rama that Clarke wrote I will wonder if the two were borrowing from one another. My suggestion is skip this book, but that being said I will read the next in the series after pausing to read Man Plus.

This is one if my favorite books ever along with Gateway
This is one if my favorite books ever along with Gateway. It is a little hard to follow now and then because it jumps back and forth so much but once you get used to it, the storyline is great. The kindle version is a bit more difficult because in the printed book has certain items separated on facing pages. Those facing pages just blend in to the total in the ebook, so they can be hard to follow

Heechee Saga
The Heechee Saga is a great classic of SF and probably the best thing that Pohl ever did. The idea and the story telling are riveting. There is also a very high and accurate scientific content, which I particularly appreciate - you'll actually learn something from this book beyond the entertainment value. There is also an obvious parallel Arthur C. Clarke's "Rama" Saga. Bottom line: this a book that really deserves to be read.

Wow, after gateway, more madness, imagination, grandeur
Usually after one crazy good book SF series just fizzle out. BBEH just goes full throttle with pure impossible tales of space exploration.

Vraiment excellent.
