Is this a good gift for a 5-year old?

The brushes included in the "Learn To Paint" set are more than likely good for adults and artists too. You're getting 2 flats or filberts, 3 rounds, a diagonal shaped dagger, and a rigger. Don't let the colored synthetic hairs on the brushes fool you. Faber-Castell is offering student grade brushes in this set which will have nice spring meaning they should bounce back to their shapes quite well when wet. They also want to have fun colors. Sold individually they'd likely cost from $3 to $8 each and higher. I'd buy these myself if I could find them sold as a separate set because to me it's color coding which is useful. This set as a whole should be great for any child with an interest in learning to paint. On the other side of the token it's also treating your child like an a adult as it is providing tools like those an artist would use.

How do you order additional paint and paper that is the same as in the set?

First I would check on Amazon and then if it's not available I would check at walmart.com

Will this paint work on wood?

The Paint is washable so I don't recommend it unless you cover it with a sealer.
