What type of material are the hinges holding the ear cups and connecting parts that hold the hinges made out of?

It appears to be metal, probably aluminum with a black coating.

Will the sound be degraded if connected to a phone or laptop without an amplifier?

These headphones are efficient enough to work with a phone or laptop. They will sound as good as the phone or laptop are capable of sounding. To hear them at their best however means plugging them into great sounding sources such as dedicated music players. And even though they sound great with external amplifiers, one of the beauties of these headphones are their ability to work with a broad array of devices without the need for an external amplifier.

Are these reference enough to be used for mixing and mastering? hows the instrumentation seperation, lows, mids, and highs?

I use these exclusively for music listening and find them to be detailed and musical with excellent tone! They have responded very well to improvements in my front end, meaning as my signal improved ( new DAC, better cables, balanced etc) the improvements were clearly audible in these HPs, much to my listening pleasure!
