Varathane Ultimate Oil Based Spar Urethane is a durable clear layer that protects outdoor wooden surfaces. Oil based formula applies easily and provides excellent resistance against scratches, weathering, UV light, and more while expanding and contracting with weather conditions. Perfect for use on furniture, trim, railing and more. Review: Pretty good, tough to apply - I had a very tough application (100% exposure to west side full South Texas sun on an outdoor wooden table). I contacted Them for some guidance, and their technical folks were very responsive. It is tough to apply. I ended up with some brush steaks that could not be felt, only seen. Technical folks said it was from me over brushing. This is a very thick liquid and it takes some effort to put on and still have not figured out to put on without back brushing. Temperature is a factor too. I had to apply before the temp got over 90 deg F which does not take long in the summer to get there. Only time will tell if this will hold up, but I think it looks pretty good. Using semi-gloss with a Wooster brush - 4 coats on top and 3 coats on the bottom. Review: Impressed with ease of application - First time using this and think I found a go to product for the outdoor furniture when that gets done next! It was easy to use and didn’t thicken up at all! I did keep using a stirring stick proactively. The temperature was 56 degrees out when I stared and almost 80 by the time I finished for the day. It applied evenly and smooth. In between coats I smoothed with fine sandpaper (220 grit or240). My last coat (when it was completely dry and not tacky) I used my secret weapon (brown paper bag) and “sanded” the surface with that. It is just enough courseness needed to smooth the surface. I used this product on mahogany wood. Hope this helps ease your mind as some of the other reviews had me a little nervous to use this product for the first time.

Good product,
We’ve used many oil based varnish’s over the years on various boats. In terms of application and finish this ranks up with the best on interior use.

Don't use over painted surfaces
Says, clear, is not. Used over a "Drive-In Movie" sign we made and the white is as others say "yellowed", we had to accept it as "antiqued" but not the intention and should have bought Krylon spray to preserve the sign. Ugh. I zigged when I should have zagged, trusting the Varathane brand name. I guess for wood only (where you don't notice the yellowing as much, but this is as bad as marine grade varnish which is always wood yellowing.
