the human body is held prisoner to human intentions
I bought this book because I am looking for a real merger, or at least a better conversation, between biological and cultural anthropologists. This conversation is growing in the field of medical anthropology, but we need to grow more. Politics is one of anthropologists' core concerns. This book, not by an anthropologist, shows one important direction we must take.

Poor condition
I bought this as a gift for my sister(required reading for her doctoral coursework). The package arrived with the cover completely unglued from the book. My sister is returning for exchange, as we live n different states.

Exemplary study on a complicated subject
This book is in my opinion a very good book. Well-written and well-organised with ample sources. It is based on insights of Foucault about the impact of medicine and other disciplines on our society and our self-image. For readers not familiar with Foucault and other theorists on the 'Psy-complex' this book presents all the essential background-information and takes this kind of analysis one step further; into the 21st century. What I appreciate is that it is free from ideological/political dogmatism. It presents a complicated reality that we all deal with: we are in many ways biological subjects and this is of interest for many social institutions and for you and me as an individual too. It sketches the challenges for the near future. It shows how much is linked here.Higly recommended!

Great insight.
Nikolas Rose’s through investigation into the rise of the phenomena of Biomedicine is a brilliant. Rose’s thesis is not all doom and gloom, although he does explain how the power of medicine has taken control of the future by examining the past. The mastery of evolution in the hands of pharmaceutical companies could be shaping a better future for humanity, but it could be the downfall of a civilization.
