Great looking lamp!
Fits in with my decor for my office perfectly. Additional outlet is great and useful. I never move this lamp, so I haven't had any problems with the shade dropping. It seems to be made to not be moved constantly.Only thing I would change about it is the on-off switch. It's a standard black (o -) switch. It would look nicer with maybe a button? Or at least a nicer looking switch. Still 5 stars though! Quality lamp, looks great, works great. Highly recommended.

Beautiful and elegant -- but with one fatal flaw.
I tried to overcome the negative comments about this lamp falling down from its base pivot hinge -- smugly thinking that some people must really hate screwdrivers -- and are a tad lazy. So I bought this lamp anyway in late March 2009. Boy, were they right. I WAS WRONG. (And trust me, I'm good with my hands when it comes to basic office furniture.)Yeah, the lamp arm fell down a few times -- but a good tighten with a screwdriver fixed it immediately. Then it happened again -- and again -- and again. Full disclosure: I like to pivot my desk lamp in different directions from time to time, depending upon what I'm working on. Sometimes I like to bounce the light off a wall to get a more even cast. I consider this normal use; not rough handling. Any desk lamp equipped with joints/hinges MUST be able to pivot in almost every direction without falling. I use compact fluorescents, so the weight of the bulb is NOT the problem. And then it happened. The lamp fell down again yesterday -- and no amount of tightening would bring it upright again.I figured out the problem. The two rubber washers at the base pivot hinge -- can only take so much tightening -- before they fail completely within 60-90 days of normal use.Hence despite glowing reviews elsewhere, keep the box. The warranty is good for two years. Better yet, don't buy this at all until Normande comes up with a better base pivot hinge -- or restricts adjustment settings to just the lamp's head, not the lamp's arm. This is a FATAL engineering flaw. I can't believe Normande would release such a elegant looking lamp as this -- without first putting it through a 24-hour motion test. What a hassle.

Nice lamp, except for the falling over part
This would be a great lamp, and I can see how those reviewers who've not had problem would love it.Despite some of the warnings here, I took a chance and bought one - and yeah, after only a couple of times of adjusting its position, this guy now just flops over. Didn't even get to put a light bulb into it before it broke. Not a loose screw issue, as I've tried adjusting that (and have even taken it apart to see if I could fix it. No luck on that so far.Amazon really should be ashamed of marketing such shoddy merchandise. As some people seem to have working lamps, apparently it is a mixed-bag. If you like to gamble and need a light, this is the lamp for you.Otherwise, STAY AWAY from this one.Maybe if I use a string to keep the top up...

Won't Stay In Position
I wanted to like this lamp. It looked good and the AC socket on the base is a real bonus to plug a charger into. But sadly the screw at the base gets lose easily and the lamp falls down. Tighten it up and a few days later it falls down again. Just not a good design. The shade is poorly mounted also.

Normande HS-1-146A 60 watt desk lamp
I truly like the look, beautiful finish and basic function of this lamp. The base is adequately weighted to hold the upright portion of the lamp. The on/off switch is easy and conveniently placed. I too have had difficulty with the lamp falling forward from the "adjustable" pivot. One time it almost knocked over a bottle of water. Another time, it almost hit the screen of my phone. It does stay in place if the lamp remains positioned as shown in the onsite view of this lamp, but I don't trust it. If it were not for this malfunction I would most certainly purchase more for my sewing table and as gifts for others.

Good lamp
This is a nice solid lamp. You can put up to a 60w bulb in it which is very bright. The base has a AC outlet built in that I have found handy. The lamp is nice and tall.I don't know what the problem was with the other reviews here saying that the lamp wont stand up. My lamp stands up fine. There is a screw at the joint, perhaps this screw came loose on some of the lamps.Overall I am pleased with this lamp.

Great value and the extra socket is very useful
The extra electrical socket on the base is great for charging electronics! Very attractive and seems sturdy. The rocker switch is easy to use.

Modern, simple, functional but not durable
Update:Lamp still works fine but it's no longer able to stand on its own. It's also not adjustable. I have to lean it against the wall.I had a similar lamp as a bedside reading lamp for years before it broke. I was thrilled to have come across this one, which looks similar but is clearly an upgrade. As a bedside reading lamp, this lamp is PERFECT for the following reasons:1. it uses regular light bulbs. my previous lamp used a strange sized bulb but this one takes a regular sized bulb so I'm able to use the energy efficient bulbs2. the light switch is located at the base of the lamp. My lamp is located right next to my bed on my nightstand so the bottom of the lamp is easily reached. I am glad the switch is on the base of the lamp and not on the head of the lamp because then I would have to get up to switch the light off.3. The lamp is of decent weight. I don't have to worry about it tipping over if i shove it in my sleep, EVER.4. The socket at the base of the lamp is the greatest thing ever! I charge my cellphone using that plug since it is so convenient. The socket is also three prong so I also sometimes charge my laptop there.5. The lamp is tall - my previous desk lamps and bedside lamps have all been pretty small. This one is about 2 feet tall and therefore provides a wider range of bright glow and stays out of my way.6. The issues with hinge - I have not had this problem since my lamp is rather stationary. I don't imagine this is the kind of lamp one would prefer for constant swivel and adjustment. The lamp does adjust but after adjusting to my need, I have not had to readjust.
