1776-1976 Eisenhower Bicentennial Dollar Coin

Great coin to add to my bicentennial collection! Awesome condition too, this was an awesome purchase for myself thanks!

I purchased several silver dollars for my daughters ROTC commissioning. The "Silver Dollar" Salute. It is a tradition in our Army that newly commissioned second lieutenants present a silver dollar to the first enlisted Soldier who salutes them. The coin symbolically acknowledges the receipt of respect due the new rank and position. [p. 95, "Customs of the Service," Army Officer's Guide, 45th Edition, Lt. Col. Lawrence P. Crocker, U.S. Army (Retired), (Stackpole Books, Harrisburg, 1990).]No one really knows the origins of the tradition, but the tradition dates back to the 19th century. Some hold that the tradition even comes from the British during the Colonial Period.The coin dollar of old was either the gold or silver piece of currency at the time. After our coinage changed from silver in the 60's, the coin of choice became the Eisenhower Dollar. Though out of circulation, most new lieutenants prefer the "Ike dollar" because its large size makes it so profoundly and easily identifiable as a "silver dollar."While non-silver Ike dollars are more readily available, please recognize that a pure traditionalist would select a pure silver dollar ... available at coin shops for about $12 to $15.

It arrived in a padded envelope and coin is labeled in a plastic envelope. So far no exposure and its a nice coin,

i like this coin not just because of its 40% silver..... but because i think its a hard to find cointhey only made it one year 1976, i think because to commemorate Independence day in the united states. basically its a one time one year issue coin........ the only thing bad about this coin is its not complete silver, as i said its 40% but its a grate coin for a collection

like it for its a piece of history that we all should know of for the U.S. is one of the best and has had some of the most powerful presidents further this gentleman just had to be one of many.

Too many scratches

You can get these at most banks.. just ask if they have any large eisenhower dollars and about half the time THEY DO!.. Lots of times they have 3-6.. How much does it cost?? (1 dollar).. then I go and buy things with it at the gas station to make people confused! because it's fun,.. like 2$ bills which are also not rare at all..
