A Personal and Historical Examination of Guy-to-Guy Friendships
This is a unique examination, some very personal to the author, of the nature and enjoyment of friendship between men. I have not seen anything like it. My closest friend and I both heartily agree that this treatment was very much needed and is enormously welcomed by both him and me (it is sufficiently unique that I assured that he had a copy by sending him one as a gift). The late Dr. Ambrose, scholar and author par excellence, has done all of us men an invaluable service by writing this little book. If you are male and have a friend or friends, you will be glad you read it as you turn the last page. We need more meaningful male bonding, rather than the superficial interactions that often pass for male-to-male friendship. This book will encourage and provoke such more serious friendships.among and between us guys!

A bit self-indulgent
I like reading Stephen Ambrose's books; however, I found this one a bit self-indulgent, as fully 20%-25% of it detailed his own personal relationships. One chapter covered his brothers; another chapter covered his friends, a third chapter covered his former students, and the final chapter covered his father. I don't begrudge him doing this, BUT, more chapters detailing other friendships should have been included. The friendships wouldn't have needed to be between famous people, either. Why not focus on combat vets and their friendships, although one chapter was devoted to Easy Company.

Short Stories
I bought this book because I am a fan of Stephen Ambrose and I like his style of story telling. It is basically a collection of his thoughts about brotherhood and bonding among men and he uses examples from his previous works to illustrate how that bonding takes place or not. I thought this book offered little in the way of historical perspective, although it may explain why Ambrose chose the subjects of his works. It is a very quick read.

My all-time favorite Ambrose book
Dr. Ambrose takes us on a journey which intertwines history with brotherhood and lasting friendships of men who forever made their marks on American history. I truly miss his writings. His name ranks among the greats like Sandberg and Sahara.

A really interesting book, especially for men
I happened to read a condensed version of this book in Reader's Digest. Even though it's about men and their relationships, it was interesting to me (a female). I decided to purchase a copy for my sons and my son-in-law because it's an uplifting and encouraging book. There aren't many out there regarding men and their relationships to other men.

Best contemporaryt history author
Stephen Ambrose is one of the finest history authors in recent years. His approach to history makes it alive and relative to our lives. He is missed by all who so admired his many works.

Awesome book
The best book since Band of Brothers. Every male should read this book, because male friendship is a lost art to the degree that the word "bromance" an expression that I hate, had gained acceptance
