Great tool for finding the center of a board for mortise and tenon joints.
The small plastic part on the top of the unit that holds the pencil was broken off when I received it, but that wasn't a problem, a quick couple of dabs of crazy glue and it was like new again. Another problem that someone else mentioned was that the pencil included didn't fit in the machined center hole, but after sanding the pencil octagonal sides it fit just fine. I also tried a standard (round #2) pencil and it also fit just fine. The hole in the unit is just a little over 1/4 inch, so any pencil with that outside dimension will work. I have to make a number of mortise and tenon joints on cabinet door frames that I'm building for a set of kitchen cabinets, plus groove the stiles and rails for the center panels and this tool will go a long way to make those groves and mortise and tenon joints perfectly aligned. This is a great tool to find the exact center of those parts quickly and easily.

Great little gadget. Simple concept simple to use.
I use this for finding the center of pieces of wood or metal I am trying to drill a centered hole in. It is a simple idea but works great. It's a little overpriced considering it is all plastic,, but it is worth every penny.

A time saver - for a price.
This is one of those useful time-saving gadgets that aren't really necessary for your shop, but when you have one, you are happy about it. Sure, I can make one of these or pull out a ruler and straight edge, but this is convenient and durable enough for shop use. It's made of plastic but that's not a big deal. I understand some reviewers had issues with the pencil hole, but mine was fine.At $18, it definitely falls into the 'do I really need this' category, but I am pleased with it and expect to get a lot of use from it.

Good product. It is made of plastic
Good product. It is made of plastic, but it's plenty sturdy. Also about the pencil- It does fit. It fits in a way that just the tips sticks out which is what you want. The hole is tapered. So I think the majority of folks are making issue out of nothing and don't understand how it's supposed to work. Simple product that works well.

Plastic body, Rough Milling, Pencil Did Not Fit
If the picture looks like this might be made of alloy, note that it is made of solid gray plastic. That's not necessarily a bad thing, just be aware of what you're getting. It appears to be partially molded and partially milled. The milling marks are fairly crude. This shipped in an unmarked plastic bag with no brand or model and no directions. A stubby lead pencil was included. The hexagonal pencil was too large to fit through the round hole of the center finder. But shaving down the ridges of the hexagonal pencil allowed for a tight fit through the hole. I tried a couple of standard #2 lead pencils from around the house and they both fit without modification. The center guide hole is a little more than 1/4 inch diameter (0.2935 inch actual) and 1.22 inch deep. The center finder measures 3.625 inches between the legs, so that's the maximum width a work piece could be. The marking hole was fairly precisely centered between the legs, but one plastic leg was 1.0315 inch (26.2mm) long while the other leg was 1.075 inch (27.3mm) long.

Mhhh yea... not worth the cost at all
Mhhh...Ok so first off I don't know why i bought this and found it to be a waste of money. Way to expensive for what it is; really just make one out of scrap wood.Ok so does it work... well kind of sort of... My issues are with the following:1. Way to expensive for a piece of plastic... I wish my return date had not passed or I would return it2. The pencil does not want to stay in like it should3. Somehow, and it might be user error by pressing to hard, i keep breaking the lead in the pencil.3.a. You do kinda have use some pressure to make sure the ends stay along the board. Meaning unless your working with a perfect cut piece of wood that is flat and flush on all edges your going to have issues.3.a.1. I finish my own wood; buy the rough stock and make boards because it is SO MUCH CHEAPER especially with hardwoods. That said it does not really work how it should becasue of the rough edges.3.a.1.i. I dont want to make the boards first then split them because then i have likely just wasted some lumber that could be used for other purposes. So what is good about it... The think maybe costs a few cents in material... and its $18.00... dont know what i was thinking to buy this... does not make my life any easier and knowing I threw $18.00 away on this junk really does not sit well with me.You know I cant say all that much about it good. Even on straight boards you have to be careful and i really dont find it any more accurate than actually measuring it and marking. Just not worth it. You could literally make this thing out of scrap wood, a drill, some glue, and a few short dowel scraps.I am not saying don't get it; I just don't think it is worth the cost and I really dont find it that useful..
