Always a winner…
I have a few favorite authors and this is one is definitely in the top 5 for lesbian fiction. It doesn’t matter when the book was written, the writing, the plot, the characters are always just exquisite and I am completely invested in their story, in their wellbeing. I was loving how this story came together and love began to pour all over the MC. I wanted to see this love win. Although I would have loved to hear more of the backstory about K.T. I would also love to hear about Reese’s parents. I would love a little more background on how Reese remained as she “was” for so long. Like a few more reflections back to her military days and etc. I was surprised by the “innocence.”

Another endearing read from Rad...
This was a beautiful and tender love story and I had to check myself a few times and just follow through and get over any initial irritations. ***Light Character Spoilers Ahead***I admit to being put off at first by the doctor's initial attitude towards Reese. However, I realized that Tory was only defensive because she is accustomed to people only seeing her injury and not her as a person. Initially I described Reese as wooden, which was not the correct assessment. Rigid is more like it, but this is only due to her strong military background and her being accustomed to a routine and orderly lifestyle. As the story progresses, Reese and Tory seem to comfort one another without being the wiser. I love Reese's strong need to protect Tory; it is innate, chivalrous, and romantically heroic. What woman does not want to feel that she is protected and safe whether she needs it or not? It's one thing to play the "damsel in distress", it is quite another to NOT need to be saved and have it come about naturally as part of the other person's personality. That is Reese all the way. This is not a world-wind romance at all. These two women have personal, and internal issues to contend with that does not allow for a "fast" romance. Tory feels disarmed and wary by Reese's striking good-looks and honesty, and her steely exterior. She feels like her injury is constantly on display, and she's also been hurt by love in the past and does not trust easily. On the other hand, Reese's entire existence was dictated by her life as a born Marine, order, duty, responsibility, and discipline. She's had no personal relationships other than those who she socialized with as a Marine. Reese is a virgin in every sense of the word. She is a virgin to desire, love, sex, and passion. The love scenes were very intense; I was moved by the tenderness of it and the raw desire both women had for each other. Rad did not diminish her femme (Tory) in this story at all. I could picture her and get a feel for her as a character. Reese (butch) was beautifully heroic and I did not feel like it was "all about her." Reese's character was humble and had an innocence about her that is wonderfully endearing. In my opinion, Reese was similar to another of Rad's characters named Rooke from her book "Secrets in the Stone."Reasons for 5 stars:Good writingBeautifully told romance and not what you expectSlow-build but worth itIntroduces a butch character that is not cocky and egotisticalStrong femme character not diminished by the butch character

One of my favorites
My favorite books aren't necessarily perfect books, but they're books that stick with me over the years, that I read repeatedly, and that touch me in some additional way. I can't deny having spent time with this book over the years, since I discovered it online, and more recently upon reading the published version. I actually understand the weaknesses pointed out by the lower-star reviews given to this book, but I can't agree about the impact of these weaknesses. Part of it is nostalgia, but mostly it's the strength of the characterizations and how they spoke to me.I thought it was interesting to read a book about a fairly well-adjusted adult who hadn't "come out" to herself. It was very believable to me that someone who lived and breathed duty in the military would just wall themselves off, particularly when raised by a father she loved and wanted to make proud. When that ceased to be the case, she left that life. A very pragmatic decision and in line with her characterization. Some people are very good at compartmentalizing, and while that may not be the average person, the character of Reese as created wasn't average herself. Perhaps too idealized? I don't think so. She definitely had her flaws, but they just weren't the blind spots that everyone would have, necessarily. She certainly had no illusions about herself, it was more that she was allowing herself to explore a different aspect of her life because it was time.I enjoy reading books about people who try to deny their attraction for whatever reason. I enjoy characters who have a past that is explored, because that really fleshes out the characters and gives them and their motivations dimension. I enjoy the vivid setting that the author sets for this book, and indeed this series set in Provincetown. I enjoy the depiction of family, and the emotional issues surrounding those relationships. A lesbian can't have a lebian mother? Seems close-minded.The wounded strength of the main characters, who are the center of the book, and eventually have to get over their hesitations and give in to their attraction is graceful, and fun to read about as Radclyffe has formulated them. An excellent foundation for this series. Perhaps not for everyone, but the characters are original, and celebrated for their strengths and humanity. Therefore, this book gets my highest recommendation.

Excellent
This is a great story to read. It has everything. Love, Honor, pride, friendship and great scenery. Radclyffe puts you right there. Her descriptions are awesome. Her characters are very realistic. The storyline isn't far from reality either. She deals with some difficult topics with compassion and sincerity. Great book, great read. I loved it. Off to look for more.

Looking forward to the series
A longtime fan of Radclyffe, I had never got around to reading her Provincetown series and having read the first one I'm sorry it took so long. Have already lined up the rest of the series. Just love the characters and look forward to more of their stories

Beautifully written with an underlying hard message
Not a good idea to read this book during a post operative time after breaking my ankle. I am rarely moved to tears by fiction but this hit a chord with me about how relationships can develop quickly. I think the author uses words and phrases that draw the reader into the book and the characters at a very raw emotional level now time for book two.

Good book but not a 5 star
This story was quite clever, but I struggled a bit with the sheriff character, just a tad too unbelievable how she had previous lived and not loved!
