3M N100 Mask filters out 99.97% of particles larger than 0.3-Microns (PM2.5 means 2.5-microns or larger). A 3M N100 Mask works well against cigarette smoke and smog covered cities.

PM 2.5 starts to become a major health problem when there is more than 35.5 micrograms (µg) of PM 2.5 per cubic meter of air, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. But the World Health Organizations recommends keeping yearly average PM 2.5 levels three times lower than that.

The most polluted cities on Earth have anywhere between 11 and 20 times that amount - based on the new WHO data from cities that collect it.

Question 2

Is this mask effective against smoke from wildfires (in surrounding cities, not fighting the fire)? How about use while spray painting? Thanks!!

I noticed that when I smell smoke from a wildfire and then put on an N95 I can't smell smoke. So it has some effect. I carry them in my car and when I travel. But - it doesn't work with spray painting. That requires another type of filter. If I spray paint outside I use an N95 and that works if there's a gentle breeze to carry fumes away.

Why is this unit 70% more in cost than the 3M Particulate Respirator 8210V, N95  Looks to be the same thing.

You're absolutely right.  You can visit the 3M site where it shows you all model numbers for their protective masks. Model 8511 specifically says on their website that this mask DOES NOT PREVENT VIRUS, GERM PROTECTION.   This is a description on one of 3M's sites w/ description of what 8511 which is given category on N95 (this is also not FDA approved).  product Code	8511  From 3M website:  This respirator can also help reduce inhalation exposures to certain airborne biological particles (examples: mold, Bacillus anthracis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis), but cannot eliminate the risk of contracting infection, illness, or disease

Is this mask reusable？

Although mentioned in other responses that it does not filter out certain viruses and bacteria, it is a good mask.  Also health authorities do not want you to use this mask as it does not filter out your own exhalations.  That being said it was the only mask I had during the early months of the pandemic.  And yes, I have used each mask over several times.  First after each use let the mask dry out for 24hrs.  Second after drying spray the inside and the outside of the mask with 70% alcohol.   Let it dry for 24hrs.   Then it should be ready to use again.  If the mask is dirty or damaged throw it out.  It was better than nothing.  During the pandemic I social distanced and stayed home only to go our for pharmacy and groceries and washed my hands and clothes.  I also would wipe down anything I brought into the home with either an 70% alcohol wipe or Clorox wipe.
