J. M. W. Turner: Painting Set Free

Amazing book with an amazing contrast between photorealistic paintings in the artist's earlier years, to the chaotic abstraction influenced to some degree by the industrial revolution. He amazed and shocked his fellow artists with the almost incoherence in his later years, but he had vision, and he is unmatched in his style in England from where he came. By the way, there is a movie about him. He seemed as gruff as one can get in his old age when he changed his style. I believe he lost favor and regained it after his death when it was discovered that all his later work was indeed brilliant. Be prepared to see vivid photos of his work, along with lots of browns, reds, oranges, whites and blues. All my current acrylic colors match. I'm thrilled!When I read the title I giggled, because it says, "Painting set free".Highly recommended from his story to his art.

Excellent book on the great Mr. Turner’s paintings. Worth buying the book for the paintings as well as for the insightful essays giving context for many of Turner’s works. After reading one can get a sense of how Turner looked at the process and art and how he executed his brilliant paintings. 👍👍

If you love the late work of Turner, this book will not disappoint you, given the quality and abundance of its reproductions, including many details that allow you to see unusually well, and to appreciate, Turner's developing brushwork and style.

I've wanted this gorgeous book ever since I viewed the JMW Turner at The Getty in LA last year. It's excellent; well written, well documented and beautiful templates of Turner's vast painting.

I could only give this a 4 star, it is the Getty collection that lacks some things.

Received this as a Christmas gift....love it. Will enjoy it for years to come.
