The whole thrust of Marxism is to organize society in a way that fosters human dignity and freedom. In contrast, capitalism converts everything and everyone into a commodity, objectifying and dehumanizing people, capitalists, workers and unemployed alike. This is alienation in a nutshell. But a nutshell is not enough, which is why Bertell Ollman's readable book is so valuable. What could be more important than to learn how to build a society that allows all of us to retain and express our humanity as subjective beings?
