Can it be used just outdoors?

I only use my fountain outdoors. However, should a person have a screened in porch or three-season room that would work just fine.

Can I add food coloring?

The only harm food coloring would do to your fountain is dye the water bowls whatever color dye you are using

Has anyone converted this fountain to solar power?

No. Ours is still going strong but no solar. It is under a patio cover
