Fun and creative take on night that inspires ideas
Nighttime personified as magical, restorative, full of care and purpose. Beautifully atmospheric, the story may be especially useful in veering the nighttime imagination away from scary stuff and toward the imaginative. The illustrations are so beautiful and the verse works well with the format.

The beauty of the natural world at night.
Brings alive the magic of night time in a way that ignites your imagination and rings true with your emotions. The words match the beautiful images in a rare combination you don't often find in many picture books today. Adults will enjoy it, too.

Excellent bedtime reading
I originally picked up Louise Greig's The Night Box, illustrated by Ashling Lindsay, because it was exceptionally pretty, with a whimsical art style and hand-lettered title (and if we're being honest, because of the fox on the cover!). What I found when I read it was a lovely book all-around, with evocative prose, beautiful word choices, and a message about the day ending, the night beginning, and the rhythms of that shift at dusk. The title refers to the metaphor/personification of nighttime living in a locked box, and being mischievous and kind when it is "unleashed" and chases away the day. Nocturnal animals come out to play while others bed down, and the pastoral scenes are gorgeously detailed by Lindsay. This book is destined to be great bedtime reading, especially to reassure little ones that the dark isn't something to be feared, but to be welcomed. It may not help children already convinced of monsters under the bed, but the comforting and thoughtful text and detailed and whimsical art are sure to be a hit with parents and kids alike.Recommended for: bedtime story fodder, readers of all ages who want to chase away nighttime's bad reputation, and anyone who appreciates a gorgeously-illustrated picture book.

I loved it
We mostly borrow from the library, but I wanted this one forever. It's a calming night time book that my 4 yr old son likes, and I love reading it to him.

Magical
Every now and again you stumble across a book that grabs you on every level. The illustrations in this book are stunning, whimsical and graceful, they fit the poetic text beautifully. This story conjures up the sheer amount of magic in our world which we take for granted, in this case the shifting of day to night and the changes that accompany this. There are so many ways this book appeals to our family, the story speaks to our sense of imagination. The anticipation of nighttime felt by the main character (Max) and everything from cutlery to a fox, created a wonderful and almost magical, atmosphere as we read. The use of deliciously descriptive language adds to the ‘feel’ of this book, making the story dreamy and rich; a perfect lullaby of adjectives to drift to sleep to.

Magical and worth every penny.
What an amazing book. The choice of language is beautiful and exposes children to lovely verse with real meaning. The images are detailed and help younger children understand the story. My four year old loved it and as a Librarian I would easily recommend this book to others. Even the idea that night is magical and has it's purpose would help little ones who struggle to settle for bedtime.

Lovely children's book
Such a beautiful book. I bought it for my 3 year old who loves the soothing rhythms of the words and the way night is described so nicely but I feel it would be suitable for older children as well.
