Muddy Waters: The Anthology, 1947-1972

A Necessary Supplement
There's a wonderful set of all of Muddy's A and B sides for Chess that eliminates the value of most of the first disc in this two-disc set. However, even in this case nobody who loves Muddy would want to miss "Stuff You Gotta Watch" on the first disc, which isn't included on the collection of released material. The second disc is of more importance if you have the A & B set (which is ridiculously cheap, by the way). The highlight for me is "Just To Be With You", which features the inimitable harp of Big Walter Horton. I wonder why Big Walter never became Muddy's regular harp player? Taking nothing away from the great James Cotton, Horton was a true original. Apparently, his erratic life-style kept him out of regular band employment. It's interesting that Muddy's sometimes harp players (the lead instrument in 1950s Chicago blues) were not only great players, but performed at their best with him in the recording studio. Junior Wells playing on "Standing Around Crying" is arguably one of his best performances. In any case, if you love Muddy, you need to buy this CD set as well as the A & B set to get the complete picture of Muddy and Chicago blues at its best.

A really good Muddy compilation
The 50 songs included that date from 1947 to 1972 are first rate songs from Muddy's prime. They're not the only worthwile Muddy by a long stretch though: He did some good work prior to 1947, there were many more good songs in the 1947 to 1972 period, and he did some really good work after 1972 as well. To do a really thorough Muddy compilation, I think you'd need at least 4 discs but these 2 discs with 50 songs total do a great job of highlighting Muddy at his prime. The liner notes are excellent and are a great source of information also.I had the chance of seeing Muddy live in concert as opening act for the Allman Brothers in the mid 1970's. Before seeing him, I knew some of his big hits and I knew he was a great influence on Allmans, Stones, Led Zeppelin and many top rock bands. After seeing him live, I became a much bigger fan as did many of the people who saw him in that period. Muddy deserves every bit of critical respect he enjoys today and these 2 discs are an excellent document of why.

With such a lengthy musical career as Muddy Waters' it's ...
With such a lengthy musical career as Muddy Waters' it's been difficult to find an anthology that covers the entire span, from his early days developing what's known today as Chicago Style Blues through his many collaborations with blues' most notable musicians. This anthology stretches from Muddy's first studio recordings with the incomparable Little Walter on harmonica, right up to his last recordings before he left us. I find myself an even bigger Muddy fan now after hearing this remarkable collection all the way through. One of my personal favorites.

Excellent anthology of blues
This is a great album, with classic blues sung by the iconic Muddy Waters. There's not really a miss on this album, with Muddy hitting the mark time and time again.Highly recommended. Don't miss this one, if you like (or love) the blues.

great compilation
I only developed an interest in the Blues recently and have grown to like this anthology more and more with each listening. The Anthology contains the songs on the Definitive Collection and I suggest buying this as there are some great songs not on the Definitive Collection cd.

Un seul oubli : le blues proto-punk "She's Allright", mais à part cela tous les joyaux y sont: "I just want to make love to you", "Rolling Stone", "Hoochie Coochie man", "The same thing" et bien d'autres. Un festival d'enregistrements chaleureux, terreux et charnus : la perfection du genre.

Muddy, we love you!
Muddy is one of the greatest artists of the 20th Century. This music carries a message so deep it took me years to comprehend it. The Anthology is great introduction to the beauty and passion of Muddy's music.

If you wonder at the reverence - look no further.
This album gives a broad review of Muddy's music across the years, including all the greatest songs. You will realise why so many people have used his music and built on his style to such great effect once you have heard this collection. The blurb that comes with it gives his story and explains why some of his earliest recordings with Chess were so bare, and how he would leave the recording session to go and play as he wanted. Treat yourself - you won't regret it.
