Placing Ben Shahn in context
The paintings can speak for themselves, but the book provides context, history, and philosophy which deepens the meaning of the work.

Far too much black and white, far too little color
The text of this book is fine. The imagery leave very much to be desired. Very poor reproductions, not very many images in color, and huge gaps in history his work. This has a certain academic appeal but it's far from being a catalogue raisonné.

The return of Ben Shahn
Nothing against the artists but the ethnic propaganda is so obvious I had to read between the lines which made the publication worthier than its cover.
