Fando Y Lis is a kaleidoscope of controversial, mystical, and brilliantly original storytelling and has some of the most beautiful imagery ever filmed in black & white. This film is extremely artistic and has a brilliant creative arrangement. I love all the hidden symbols, and metaphorical structures and patterns throughout this wonderful motion picture. Alejandro Jodorowsky is one of the finest directors of our lifetime. Consider your self lucky to be able to experience this incredible treasure. The director's commentary track is highly entertaining and incredibly funny. There is also a fantastic documentary called "La Constellation Jodorowsky" which features an interesting look at Jodorowsky's other works like Tarot reading and Psycho-Magic, and the gone astray project of Dune that will blow you away.

Anyone watching this early work, Fando and Lis, would be forgiven for not believing that Alejandro Jodorowsky eventually learned to produce films that aren’t complete dreck. Only a glimmer of a thesis near the end of the film and abundant absurd imagery keep this from being totally incoherent and meaningless.The crux of the problem is that to critique or satirize grand concepts of economics, government, or as in this case, religion, visual symbolism is a pathetic substitute for narrative and exposition. It usually fails; it fails here. We see Fando acting horribly, but it’s impossible to trace those actions to any particular cause. Instead, we get the same lack of conviction generated by Pasolini’s “Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom” – “here are some bad people, look how horrible they are.” True, but neither Salo nor Fando makes a coherent argument to that effect. It’s just the visual equivalent of name calling, however well deserved those names may be.The characters are annoying, the interesting scenes are separated by long periods of tedium, and the symbolism is mostly meaningless. And for my personal taste, it's made worse by using a usually boring plot structure, the road trip. Naturally, the characters encounter a seemingly never-ending series of artificial and irrelevant obstacles. Only the weirdness keeps you awake.Jodorowsky is no Arrabal. But for works of his that are considerably more worthwhile and also accessible, try "El Topo" or "Santa Sangre", or better yet, the more recent "Dance of Reality." Like "The Holy Mountain", "Fando and Lis" isn’t worth the climb.

Interesting but not interesting enough. Weird but not weird enough. When doing an abstract film please go all in or don't bother.

Good Movie

An underseen gem by Jodorowsky, but this edition - despite what it says on the DVD case - only has Spanish subtitles.

while not as epic as el topo or as surreal and transcendental as holy mountain, fando y lis is still a beautiful film and one worth watching. if i bought it again, i would just save some money and get the three together in the collection. the film is black and white, so although it lacks some of the wonder of the other two, its still beautiful in its own right. if you enjoyed the other two, definitely give this a shot.

"Fando y Lis" ist der Debutfilm des 1929 geborenen chilenischen Regisseurs und Gesamtkünstlers Alejandro Jodorowsky und stammt aus dem Jahr 1967. Der ca 97 Minuten lange s/w-Film ist deutlich geprägt vom Surrealismus, Symbolismus und der Tiefenpsychologie. Das Drehbuch schrieb Jodorowsky zusammen mit dem spanischen Dramatiker Fernando Arrabal. Der Film wurde größtenteils in Mexiko gedreht, oft ohne Drehgenehmigung und an eher öffentlich zugänglichen Orten, wie beispielsweise den Ruinen einer Anstalt für psychisch Kranke oder auf einem Friedhof.Leider ist der Film schwer zu bekommen. Diese DVD ist eine spanische Pressung aus dem Jahr 2007 und enthält auch nur spanischen Ton. Der Film selbst wurde für die Veröffentlichung bildtechnisch restauriert und sieht ziemlich gut aus. Allerdings gibt es einen Audiokommentar des Regisseurs auf Englisch, der ziemlich interessant, jedoch auch schwer verständlich ist, weil Jodos Akzent doch ziemlich stark ist und man sich sehr bemühen muss, ihn überhaupt zu verstehen. Der Film selbst ist eher Surrealismus, mit Hommagen an Dali (brennendes Klavier) und Anhänger seiner Bewegung, enthält aber natürlich schon die für Jodo typischen Provokationen, die man heutzutage natürlich im Kontext der Zeit sehen muß. Auch sein Faible für Freaks, körperlich Behinderte Darsteller und Transvestiten konnte er schon ziemlich ausleben. Diese tauchten auch später in all seinen weiteren Filmen auf. Die Handlung: Liz wird als Kind von drei Männern sexuell missbraucht. Als Erwachsene ist sie unfähig zu laufen. Ihr Freund Fando schiebt sie mit diversen Gerätschaften durch die Gegend und versucht alles für sie zu tun. Sexuell verweigert sie sich ihm trotzdem, woran das Paar nicht nur beziehungstechnisch letztendlich zerbricht. Liz Gehbehinderung ist hier ein Symbol für eine "zerbrochene Puppe", und Puppen tauchen im Film viele auf. Jenseits des reinen Symbolismus bleibt die Handlung strange, die Bildsprache ist jedoch ziemlich stark und fängt wunderschöne Bilder ein. "Interessant" ist der Film auf alle Fälle, und ein bißchen Bonusmaterial gibt es auch..
