Socom 4 Original Game Soundtrack
J**B
Quintessential Bear McCreary
If ever two soundtrack albums got together and had a baby, this is it, namely Battlestar Galactica: Season 4 and Human Target (Season 1) (Soundtrack) (Expanded 3 Disc Set) making sweet sweet love to produce this video game soundtrack, which is two discs full of action music combining the bombastic orchestral swagger of Human Target with the integrated panoply of Asian instrumentation that BSG is known for. This set is particularly heavy on gamelan, which is used quite evocatively.I know nothing about the game and don't really care; I'm not a big gamer anymore. I simply conclude that this is a pretty interesting and substantial collection of action music. For a Bear McCreary fan, I'd go for those other two albums first, but this is a good way of digging deeper into his work.

Bear!
As I said elsewhere, McCreary's popularity is causing him to get a lot of OSTs now, and either the producers aren't giving him enough latitude, or he's too overworked to do a good job. This particular soundtrack--and I say this as someone who has all of McCreary's OSTs and is a big fan--is terrible. It sounds like music that wasn't good enough to make it into the Halo 1 OST. It's bland, punchy, heroic background music, and it doesn't have any of the wonderful moody instrumental one-offs, or the kitschy vocal one-offs, that have brought so many of his other albums to stellar levels.

Best soundtrack ever
Just wow, I love Asian string instruments, they sound so peaceful and bring a very specific ambiance, mix that with some heroic action music and you get the perfect mix of slow and fast paced music.

I LOVE IT
There is a bonus track at the end of disc 2. It's the theme song, but it has been made to sound like an old sega game. It's really cool!
