having lived the trail in past years, the book is a fabulous read. the author must have examined all the territory given all his books on this subject matter.

According to page 3 – see Look inside⤵ – Pylos was in the north-western corner of the Peloponnesos. But the remains of Homer’s ‘sandy Pylos’ are actually in the south-western corner of the Peloponnesos.Subsequently corrected to “Sudwestern der Peloponnes” in the 2016 German translation “Zurück nach Ithaka” (p 11), perhaps by the translator Jörg Fündling.

What a pleasure to read John Freely's guide to the Homeric sites! His knowledge of the texts is profound and is illuminated by a lifetime of exploration and reflection. Freely is one of the great writers of popular history--in the best sense of the term. Like Kenneth Clark, he wears his scholarship lightly, writing with depth but also with an unpretentious, urbane charm.

A kind of precis of Odysseus's journey home. To call it a guide is to underestimate its impact, as it explains both the world of the time and that same world of today, drawing our attention to significant features and bringing us back to the text in the translation of Richmond Lattimore, appealing all the while to a number of scholars who have specialised in relevant background detail. This is a wonderful travel book, whetting the appetite all the way, and making us eager to return to the extraordinary story told by Homer.

Entlang der Epen Ilias und Odyssey, die in knapper Form mit ausgewählten Textstellen nacherzählt werden, verfolgt der Autor die mögliche / wahrscheinliche Reiseroute. So wird die Epoche Homer's mit der Ausbreitung der Griechen im Mittelmeerraum umso verständlicher. Weniger die heroischen Kämpfe stehen im Mittelpunkt der Erzählung, sondern vielmehr die menschlichen Erfahrungen, eine Wertecodex und das Reisen.Empfehlenswert!
