For those who love paper--and cutting/tearing it up
This is not a book for paper collectors (guilty). You have to actually *use* paper to make these lovely creations. In the process, you will learn there is much more to tissue than shoving a few sheets into a gift bag.Rose Windows is all about working with tissue paper and how the characteristics of tissue play into the color and intensity of making a Rose Window. There are about eight pages using the basic technique to make a project accompanied by color photos, templates and line drawings to assist in the explanation. Following that is a short project giving a variation of the basic technique. The remainder of this small-format book gives further variations of stars and rosettes, then making transparencies. The big finale is actually not a Rose Window at all, but a rather extensive project with photos, templates, and line drawings explaining how to make a complex scene using tissue paper. The key to the projects is that in order to get the real effect you need to have a light source behind it--like a window! Actually, maybe a person could start out small putting a design on a clear square candle holder.I have not done much with tissue other than crumpling it up and spreading it out for a background on a greeting card. This is a nice exploration into discovering what tissue paper can really do. I can see a card in my future with a Rose Window in the front aperture using a clear transparency to protect it.The one thing I wish I could have found (maybe I missed it) is a discussion of whether one type of tissue works better or looks prettier or blends colors better than another (i.e., Art Spectrum, fade-proof, run-of-the-mill dollar store stuff). Can I spend a little or should I spend a lot?

Beautiful craft to do with elementary school aged kids
When I attended a parent-child Waldorf class with my young son, we folded some simple tissue paper stars together and had them up in our window for about a year before the color had completely faded. This year I wanted to make some more with him but was ready for something a little more advanced.I have really enjoyed these because the first rose window is simple and the instructions are easy to follow. My son who is six and a half can follow the diagrams of showing where to cut while I read aloud the written instructions. Each rosette includes some variations to help explore the difference in patterns. The patterns in the book progressively get a little more intricate with detailed cutting. Because they are round and you fold them in eighths, it reminds me a lot of making paper snowflakes.Overall, it is a wonderful project that we really enjoy doing together. They are beautiful to look at the different dimensions of colors that stand out when placed in our windows and they also make homemade beautiful presents that a young elementary school child can make with a little bit of instruction.

wonderful paper craft book
A wonderful surprise awaited me at the opening of the book! I bought the book, after buying another book, based on its cover shown at Amazon, which did not prepare me at all to the book content. In fact, I expected a different technique than that presented in the book. The projects wonderful, transferred pretty clearly and accompanied by clear and beautiful images.Too bad you can not look at the content of the book on Amazon. The book is recommended for all paper crafts lovers.

hooray!
I had this book before but loaned and lost it. It is superb. Simple drawings and instructions to make really impressive and gorgeous rose windows. They make super Christmas presents and costs pennies to make. Or just for your own decorative pleasure. Great book.

I love looking through the ideas in this book
I love looking through the ideas in this book, very inspiring. I do not think it is suited for beginners but I do believe that if you want to learn how to do it; with time, patience, and practice you will create something beautiful.
