Great Gift!
I purchased this "trilogy" for my 84 year old step father that likes war books and war history. It came recommended by a co-worker who is a history buff. The quality is beautiful. There is nothing like a hard bound book for avid readers. Also- the text is a litter larger than a paperback. My step-dad has already enjoyed the first (An Army at Dawn) and is looking forward to the others. The set was expensive for the hard bound books but for a gift- worth every penny. It will be a great addition to my Dad's library. Arrived quickly and was well packaged to protect the books.

Beyond expectation
I was amazed that this product was "used" because it was in perfect condition! It arrived prior to the expected date and the price was incredibly reasonable. Thank you!

A World War-2 Collection that WOWS!
This extraordinarily researched and written epic focuses on three major military campaigns in WW-2: North Africa, Italy and the Normandy invasion. Author Rick Atkinson's puts you inside the minds and hearts of both generals and privates is this intense, anecdotal review of what was a bloody, brave and brutal test of the American military. The author's access to the diaries of major players (Ike, Churchill, Patton, Montgomery etc) provides stunning information on the successes, strategy mistakes and vainglory in the political and military hierarchy of the Allied forces. The saga makes it clear that the Nazi's and their minions were defeated by the dedication and industrial expertise of the US worker and taxpayer..as much as by the military. This trilogy is a long tough read which requires an emotional as well as a time commitment. Every minute spent with these brilliantly crafted reviews of the WW-2 places, people and politics...are treasured minutes. If you've ever wondered why "war is hell."...this collection by Atkinson will provide heretofore unappreciated insights...including many American readers may find hard to accept. Bravo Mr. Atkinson and God Bless all those Americans..many of whom Tom Brokaw referred to as "The Great Generation." Truly they were!

I recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it
I am a WWII History reader and somehow omitted reading this trilogy about the European War Theater. I recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it. Rick Atkinson doesn't write like Steven Ambrose, but his writing is excellent and informative. Atkinson includes a lot of related illustrative information into a paragraph, whereas Ambrose tends to include a lot of detail of the event. Both are equally informative and interesting and readable. I found Atkinson's use of maps and text in the trilogy a bit difficult to follow. Atkinson relates events in great detail but I found it difficult to relate the text detail to the map detail. I enjoy and appreciate maps and I believe more maps and less detail on the maps would have been more effective. I highly recommend the Trilogy to any student of WWII in Europe. It would be great if Atkinson would do for the Pacific Theater what he's done for the European Theater.

Fascinating
Rick Atkinson did his homework and the letters home from dog soldiers to Generals were very telling and helped get to know these fascinating people. His descriptions of Battle were the best I’ve ever read. You felt you were there! Every young person today should read this Trilogy and learn of the sacrifices these Men and Women made to make the world safe from a mad man!

Highly recommended seller and product
Superb set - very informative - although being used as a 'dip-in and dip-out' to aid study. Books were immaculate and service was superb.

Grand chronicle of war
I read about 20% of the first two volumes in the e-book format and decided this is just too good - I've got to have the physical copies for keeps. Lucky Amazon was selling this beautiful box set of hardcovers at a good discount. The history recounted here is harrowing, heartbreaking, fascinating and it fills you with anger at the sheer madness and waste of war. The writing is simply magnificent, both in terms of battle descriptions and in character portraits of individuals.
