Works great on Pineapple. 60 Second carving - Steel is very strong.
We purchased this to make pineapple carving easy. I was tired of constantly trying to trim pineapples. Now, I can get a pineapple sliced and cored in about 60 seconds! It really works well. We've had it for about 9 months had have probably carved over 2-dozen pineapples. We typically go through 1 to 2 pineapples per week now that we have the OXO Good Grips slicer. You just slice the top off, position the slicer on the top and then turn it (and use the ratchet to make it easier). In about 60 seconds, you have a cored, sliced pineapple. I would highly recommend this item if you like pineapple. We find we are eating more of it since we have it because it is so easy to slice. Also, pineapples need to be sliced after you get them home from the store or they will quickly turn on you and rot. This device stops us from procrastinating since it is such a quick and easy slicing process. You do need some hand strength to get it started though. I would not recommend the plastic versions of this that I have seen in a few stores. Having the steel blade and the ratcheting function is extremely helpful. I can't imagine the plastic blade lasting or being as effective at slicing as the steel one from OXO. Pros: Slices and cores pineapples in about 60 seconds Makes uniform circle slices without the core Very easy to use Easy cleanup Cons: You need decent hand strength to hold the pineapple and turn the blade when you first start it. Once you get it started though, it is extremely easy to slice through the rest of the pineapple. I have no issue with it and neither does my wife. It could be a challenge for an elderly person with arthritis in their hands, but I don't know. We purchased 3 more of them for gifts for friends (all women) and they all like it use it frequently. I hope this helps...

Convenient cutting, but also wastes a lot of fruit. Expensive
I bought this back in 2012 and just realized that I never reviewed it. Have used it more times than I can remember. This tool makes cutting pineapples very easy. The steps I always take are: 1. Wash pineapple 2. Cut off the top of the pineapple 3. Measure the pineapple's height and make a mental note of its height on the tool itself. This helps ensure you know when you need to stop so the tool doesn't go past the bottom and onto your chopping board 4. Place the tool onto the pineapple and gently start twisting. Do not apply force or you'll lose a lot of juice 5. Keep twisting until you get towards the height you measured earlier 6. Pull out the tool -- this will bring up the entire pineapple. Be mindful of any juice you bring up. You might want to save as much juice as you can so you can later have a delicious drink 7. Remove the black handle from the tool so the pineapple can be removed 8. Slice one side of the pineapple to separate the pineapple rings 9. Remove the pineapple core from the center of the tool. You can either throw it away or slice them smaller to eat. They don't taste that bad and are perfectly edible 10. Wash the tool You will notice how much of the pineapple is left wasted, especially if it's wide. So, what I do next is to cut the pineapple shell in half and filet the remaining fruit meat. As long as the pineapple quality is good, you should have a pretty clean cut. The ease/difficulty of cutting also depends on the ripeness of the fruit. There are cheaper alternatives available for $7 or so. As long as they are stainless steel, they should be fine. Is the $21 of the OXO worth it? Probably not. I could purchase 3 of the $7 for the same price.

I didn't know I needed this so much until I started using it.
I love pineapple, especially fresh pineapple. I have spent years buying my beloved fruit already cut up and sold in those clear plastic, half quart, "convenience" containers at the grocery store. Yes, I was completely intimidated by the stack of whole, fresh from the field, pineapples, despite the clear monitary savings they offered. Because of my reluctance to attempt to remove the delicious fruit from its spiney skin, I paid three times as much for some unknown person to cut up my pineapple and drop it in a plastic tub. All this changed when I discovered the OXO Good Grips Stainless Steel Ratcheting Pineapple Slicer! This little tool is fabulous!!! It peals and cores a fresh pineapple in less than a minute. Simply slice off the top of the pineapple and use the OXO tool to create a long coil of uniformly cut, rings of pineapple. The hard core of the fruit is seperated and out slides a golden cylinder of deliciousness. I was amazed at how much better this pineapple tastes than that precut stuff I had been buying. The tool has already paid for itself in the money I have saved from the prepackaged stuff I used to buy. Don't hesitate to purchase this tool. It is easy to use, easy to clean, and easy to store. The ratcheting handle allows you to work faster and to apply consistent pressure as you work. There are even measuring marks on the cylinder of the tool to help insure you don't cut through the bottom of the fruit. The intact skin left after you remove the fruit makes a unique serving container or even a nifty drinking vessel. Iced tea served in a fresh pineapple cup is delicious and delightful, though I do recommend using a straw when serving. You really can't go wrong with this product. Just for clarification, I have received NO compensation for my review. I truly just like this tool this much.

Easier to clean
Better than the cheaper models. Seams are smooth. Cheaper models have rough seams - pineapple bits get caught and not easy to remove the bits. This model is definitely worth the higher price.

Took a few goes to get it right. If you're not careful and go off centres you end up straying to the side and going through the outside skin and wasting half the pineapple. Once you get this right it makes cutting up a pineapple easy as, minimal mess or skin in the final edible part. Have found cutting the bottom off so you're working on a flat bottomed pineapple that doesn't roll each time you twist the cutter deeper works best. Once you remove the pineapple from the inside there's usually about half a cup of fresh juice inside that you cam drink straight from the pineapple.
