Christmas in the Trenches Hardcover – August 1, 2006

Yes, this one is a little expensive, BUT IT'S WORTH IT. Our family has a tradition of a "book tree" at Christmastime: A little tree under which lay an assortment of Christmas books we've collected over the years, including everything from Dickens "A Christmas Carol" to "Thomas the Train Saves Christmas." When we borrowed this book from our library, and especially as we listened to the CD reading, my whole family - hubs and 14 year old son included - welled with emotion, heartache, and gratitude, and knew we needed a permanent edition under our book tree. This is a true story of peace at Christmastime, and is well worth your purchasing, reading, and yearly Christmastime revisiting.

I was first introduced to this story in a class I took for professional development. This year I used the book with Kindergarten and 2nd grade students as part of my Christmas Around the World Unit. We looked at a map of No Man's Land, talked about where the setting of the story was, and found the area on a world map. I also found a diagram of trench warfare which showed the Allies and Axis powers and had them color code them on the map. We talked about the language barrier and how most of the soldiers couldn't understand each other but were able to communicate in other ways. We discussed how they used candles on the Christmas tree and why they didn't use lights. We made candles out of Model Magic for them to take home.

Given to our 13 year old grandson who is interested in history. My husband and I enjoyed reading the book and inscribing it for our grandson for Christmas, as is our family custom. Highly recommended!

This is an historical event that is little known to today's generations. I read the book and played the accompanying taped music to a group of third grade girls. Silent Night will never be the same to them ever. Well done. Beautiful music. Worthwhile to pass on to our children.

As a family of veterans, including WWII, we have enjoyed this holiday remainder of peace and understanding. It's a great family book to read and enjoy over and over.

Very amazing true story about the Christmas Truce in WWI. The illustrations in this book are wonderful. I would highly recommend this book!

Beautiful book. I searched high and low for it the last couple of years and could not find it. It is perfect for young or adults. I was surprised to see it had to be shipped from England....but was willing to pay the price as I could not find it locally.

Great story and the quality of the book is very high. The single is really great and sung beautifully by John McCutcheon.
