Well written book on the economic/social consequences that first world countries have on third world countries. A highly nuanced book offering a map to the dysfunction and demise of the third world countries and the major role that the west had.

A helpful primer in the root causes of global poverty
(This is a review based upon the third edition). This book was a watershed in my understanding of the history of global poverty and the developing world. There are specific reasons why the majority of the world is still poor (and it wasn't what I learned growing up). A great primer for all who are considering working, volunteering, or even touring in the "third world." While not comprehensive, a great introduction to the history, the global economy and the legacy of colonialism and global independence movements. Provides a solid framework to begin understanding the world beyond the evening news.
