These blocks may be good, but colonization and startup is left to the buyer.
I have bought a few mushroom growing kits, and all that I have bought have been ready to set up for fruiting. This one was different as there was a date of inoculation stamped on the grow bag, and the instruction stated to put the block in a warm, dark place for 45 days from the date stamped on the bag. In my case, the stamped date was just a couple of days before I received it, so I had to wait the full 45 days. So much for immediate gratification. On the plus side, the grower does supply a very detailed brochure, including pictures, on what to do and what the block should look like as the mushrooms start to develop. It is also helpful that the grower offers both phone and email support to get you started and encourages sending them pictures of progress. Since my block didn't look like it was suppose to, I had to soak it overnight and then put it in the frig overnight.I received this block on 1/10/2019, and the pictures show the development of mushrooms on 3/07/19. The dark brown spots you see are the baby mushrooms. In my opinion, this is a very long time to see any mushroom growth, and colonization of the block should not be left to the buyer.Depending on the development of the mushrooms and the first flush yield, I may change my opinion, but the growth I am seeing on this block is currently much slower than that on a logs I bought from two other sellers.UPDATE 03/25/19:Having waited almost 3 months for mushrooms from this kit which included 45 days for it to colonize, waiting for it to grow mushrooms, shocking it again per the supplier's instructions, and waiting again for growth. Nothing has happened. The supplier has finally agreed to send me another shiitake kit in a month after it has colonized. I hope the replacement kit grows some mushrooms, but after all this time, I would be hesitant to buy from the seller again. I will update this review if the replacement kit grows anything.I hope this review was helpful for you, and I will update the review with pictures and comments as these mushrooms develop.
