Asterix the Gaul: Album #1

Great, if not quite the original.
I first read Asterix the Gaul when I was seven or eight years old, and loved it. From then on, I raided libraries finding every Asterix book I could lay my little fingers on, and when I reached high school, the French versions of the books were given to us as a fun way to become familiar with the language.(I didn't like that much. I didn't want to struggle through trying to understand Asterix, I wanted to read through and laugh at it. But it was still a better idea than the rest of the stuff they threw at us.)This edition of the book is still excellent, and still funny. It's missing a few details compared to the original, as some other reviewers have commented, but it's not the kind of thing that new young readers will notice is missing. If you're an adult looking to pick up a copy of the book you treasured as a child, then it may strike a little sore; but for new readers, this really can't come highly recommended enough.

Good book and fun to read
This is a really fun book. It is educational too. It teaches kids geography and they don't really know they are learning. It is funny with bright colorful pictures. It is a fast read however it is a MUST reread. Kids reread it again and again. The kids have not seen this book at all in the stores or at the school library. So it is fun to buy this and show them something that they can't buy just anywhere. I would buy this again and other books by this author and in this series. I would recommend this book to anyone.

The Antics Begin
While Goscinny and Uderzo were still figuring out their characters, this first in the Asterix series is a lot of fun. It's especially a treat for Asterix fans to see the slightly less-refined characterizations, and those who are new to the series should enjoy this introduction to the members of the little Gaulish village who are still holding out against the Roman invaders -- with the help of some magic potion. The Asterix stories are full of silliness, cartoon fighting, and puns, and "Asterix the Gaul" is no exception. Despite being the first, it holds up well and is the appropriate welcome to those who wish to visit with these lovable Gauls.

A must read comic book
This is a great album. I remember reading the full collection when I was a kid, and now my kids are reading it too. It’s a well written and very smart story that teaches history too. Great for everyone, from kids to elders.

A Childhood Classic of Mine
I was talking with my husband about reading the Asterix books and watching the animated films as a kid and started reminiscing about growing up in Europe, so I was thrilled to find this on Amazon to take a trip down memory lane and introduce my husband to Asterix and Obelix. Classic entertainment.

BRINGS BACK CHILDHOOD MEMORIES
Book was as expected. I used to read original French hardcover of "Asterix" as well as "Tintin" as a child growing up in Montreal Canada in the late 1960's. I bought this one to show my kids. Now living in the USA, I was glad to see that English versions were available. While I would not mind getting all thirty (30)+ books, not willing to pay the $300+.Although a little slow to arrive, the book was well packaged and in new condition.

Long time fan ...
I was stationed at the American Embassy, Berlin, DDR, back in the early 1980s. I was able to go back and forth freely with my handy dandy Auswise ... which was a diplomatic ID, making the Berlin Wall magically invisible, or, at least, irrelevant. One would get their ass chewed if they flashed their passport to get across Checkpoint Charlie. Love cartoons, and even love drawing cartoons. While in Europe, I decided to try something with a little more local flair ... Asterix and Obelix. I liked it so much I didn't even care it was French. Rereading these now 30+ years later, still get a kick out of them.

Excited to find these on Amazon!
We had this whole collection when we were kids and our parents sold them in a garage sale to our great disappointment. We've thought about how much we enjoyed these books as kids and wished we still had our copies. Just found them here and I'm giving them to my siblings for Christmas. So excited! The paperbacks are good quality - they seem to be "hardier" than I remember them being back in the day. Covers are thick shiny cardstock and not paper thin. Colors are vibrant and clear.

Excellent quality
Paper and print quality are both excellent and as expected from the original Asterix comic book series - buy without hesitation if you’re a fan or a new reader. Hope to build the entire collection over time. In hand, this takes you well back in time!

The quality of the translation did not loose the humour from the original French text.
Excellent,. The translators did a great job. We intend to give it to my oncologist because he prescribed his own"potion" to help heal my throat after radiation.

interesting read
I liked reading this like I liked watching the animated film even though characters seemed to have names changed between versions
