Used book sent
Book cover feels rough/dirty, but looks ok. Inside is clean and looks new except for an inscription. Nowhere on my order is it listed that the book is used. I thought I was buying new. The inscription inside definitely shows it is a secondhand copy. I didn’t pay a lot for the book so it isn’t worth returning. Buyers beware and triple check that your book is new if that is what you prefer.

An OK Volume of Christmas Verse
I've always enjoyed these Everyman's Library Pocket Poets volumes. And I did like this one. But it's also the first one I've read that was little more than just OK. Part of the problem, for me, is that the Christmas theme resulted in a selection that seemed narrow and repetitious. How many ways are there to write poems about the Nativity? There were some good selections. My favorites include Langston Hughes's "Shepherd's Song at Christmas," a sweet poem told from the point of view of the shepherd bringing all he had to the manger. Another favorite was Robert Louis Stevenson's standby "Christmas at Sea." Perhaps my favorites of all were Auden's "From For the Time Being" and John N. Morris's "Untrimming the Tree." They both describe life returning to normal the day after the big day. There were some clinkers. Robert Lowell's "New Year's Day" was simply awful: pretentious and overwrought. John Frederick Nims' "New Year's Eve" was too cutesy for its own good. Most of the poems, however, were just a little too familiar, a little too ordinary. This was especially true of the poems in the "Christmas Carols" section. I'm glad I read this small volume of Christmas poetry. There are a few I'm sure I'll read again. But overall this volume is not one of the better ones in the Pocket Poets series.

Everyman vs.Holyfool
As editor of The Holyfool Book of Classic Christmas Verse , I am naturally prejudiced toward that volume; however, I recognize this Everyman book may be better for some usages: hence this comparison. This Everyman book is a beautiful compact hardcover; my volume is much larger, with a beautiful cover but not so much so. This Everyman volume is much more "gift-ish", though mine might make a better present for some more active readers. This Everyman volume contains some beautiful modern poems, while mine stops with the late Victorians. My own volume contains twice as many poems. Both are of a high literary quality. Mine attempts to be fairly comprehensive for the centuries it covers (14th-19th), whereas this Everyman volume is basically a sampling. Hopefully, you can purchase both, but I hope this comparison may prove useful if you must choose.

Great to find a Christmas Book
My favorite Christmas poetry anthology remains O Holy Night Masterworks of Christmas Poetry, but this one has some gems.

A wonderful little treasure
What a great little book or poems. Not too heady - very enjoyable. Includes some carol lyrics. It harkens to a more genteel time. The language is flowery but not over the top. Bought a copy for a dear friend that lives 2500 miles away. Nice to know that we are sharing the same great works - just not together.

Tremendously good value. Bit of an American slant and it struck me that there were poems missing. Still good fun.

Christmas is both a holiday and a holy day, ...
... and from the start it has been associated with poetry, from the song of the seraphim above the manger to the cherished carols around the punch bowl.
