The Cow Loves Cookies

So Fun! And humor that 2-4 year olds can get!
Hard to explain why or just how much we love and laugh with this book. Its one of my favorites to read with my 2-4 year old grandchildren. They get how funny it is that a cow loves cookies so we get a kick out of each time it repeats. As the rhyme repeats, it adds another animal the farmer feeds so the next time it repeats, I pause and the grandchildren say what food is being fed to the animal. Ok - we have an exorbitant amount of fun saying "slop" for the pigs and really ham it up, making faces apropos of slop . OK - so I am the ham and they follow my lead enthusiastically. In the end, the farmer shares the cookies with the cow and the cow shares its milk with the farmer to dunk his cookies in. Everything is better when we share! Especially laughs...

Rulers and the proletariat
The thing I find so interesting about this children's story is the way the insidious line between the proletariat and the ruling class is carefully and gradually introduced. It all starts innocently enough. At the start, the farmer feeds the horse hay, and “the horse just loves to nibble hay. He eats it every single day.” OK, so far, all good. “But the cow loves cookies.” So what are we to make of this- not so clear… Yet.The farmer continues. He feeds the chickens chicken feed, and “they love their feed.” So far, so good. “The farmer feeds the geese each morn. He always gives them sweet, cracked corn.” Sounds like a lovable farmer, right? But then, just a few short pages later- the demeaning of the workers begins:“When Farmer feeds the hogs their slop, they love to eat that gooey glop. They oink and snort; they grunt with glee. They eat like pigs it seems to me.” Can you see where this is going?Meanwhile, while the pigs eat their slop like pigs, “the cow loves cookies.”So how come the cow gets to eat cookies while the rest of the workers eat feed and slop? Yup, you guessed it- she made a deal with management.Farmer (the ruling dictator) gives the cow cookies and she gives him milk and they both enjoy a daily picnic of milk and cookies. Does the cow even realize that she is enabling this bastard to continue to rule the farm with an iron fist?I think not.

Fun book.
This is a really fun book full of sing-songy rhyme that traces different farm animals and what they love to eat, always concluding with the cow, who loves cookies, and finally stopping with the reason why. I bought it when my oldest two were two and three, and they loved it. They are three and four now, and it is still a fun book to get out and read from time to time. The cookie subject matter helps :-), but it is also fun because the natural rhythm and repetitive nature of the writing allows for easy pausing by the reader so the little ones can fill in the blanks. I definitely love having this in our library.

Cute rymes
This is a quick read and is cute but with simple and authentic illustrations. It was bought as a Christmas gift for our pre-kindergarten grand daughter, thinking the intellectual level would be about right for her, but the surprise was that her first grader sister sort of pounced on it and got a big kick out of semi reading it herself and being helped along for the first time through. The bounce of the verses is appreciated when you begin to hear it read aloud. The idea of a cow eating cookies seemed pretty hilarious to the girls. They live on the edge of town and are attracted to "farm animal" type stories and games although their life style is pretty urban.

Across the ages
I enjoyed this book so much, I bought one for each of our grown children to read with their children. I read "The Cow Loves Cookies" to my friends at the nursing home and special things happened there, too. People "helped" read the story with me, some laughed, some pointed bony aging fingers toward the lively farm animals. One time saliva dripped out of a friend's mouth. Her smile was priceless. Another non-verbal friend asked me to come back and read it again. How fun to watch facial expressions change from curiosity to understanding! I especially enjoyed keeping the secret answer to why the cow loves cookies until the end.

Another Hit by Karma Wilson
My husband and I love Karma Wilson's books almost as much as our 2 1/2 year old does! (We also have Hogwash, The Bear Snores On, and The Bear Wants More...all 5 stars!!!) We read to him every night at bedtime but he loves his books so much that we often read several times together throughout the day! It makes it even more enjoyable when I find the books as cute and funny as my son does. I'm looking forward to purchasing more of Wilson's books, particularly The Bear series.
