The BEST Gate
ITEM: Regalo 2-in-1 Extra Wide Stairway and Hallway Walk ThroughBaby Safety Gate (Metal) COMMENTS: I am using this at the bottom of my stairs to prevent pets from going up - please keep this in mind that this is the only function I have in mind in this review. PROS: - This gate function is amazing, it’s a lift in/out style just like I remember when I was a kid and SO much better than all the over-engineered safety ones that are impossible to get open. There is still is a thumb latch, but it’s possible to install it without. - All of the contact points are adjustable, so if you’re like me and have uneven walls/baseboards/etc you can still mount it perfectly. - Absolutely no sound, resistance, or other function issues. - It’s metal and you can purchase installation kits! This is fantastic in the light of throwaway culture. - It’s one of the best gates and the lowest price. It’s honestly a win all around. NEUTRALS: - I purchased a used one examined by Amazon and it was missing a piece. I’m currently working with Regalo customer service and they’re being quite helpful. Will update if there’s any issue with it. As it stands, because the piece was one of the stops and not necessary for me, I installed and am still beyond pleased. CONS: - None! GIFTABILITY: (All of my packages are sent with Prime Delivery Day and manufacturer’s packaging preference selected. This may impact how things are shipped and cause my packaging experience to differ from yours.) It came shipped in the manufacturer’s packaging (a cardboard box); which was branded in black print. I would recommend not directly gifting it unless you’re not concerned about the surprise being disrupted. WOULD I PURCHASE? (This is a holdover from my Vine reviews, I actually purchased this directly, but figured I’d include it anyway - any prices noted are as of the time of writing): Yes, and absolutely will again if I need another! With a list price of $39.99 (currently marked down to $34.98), you can stop your search here. It’s hands down the best between price and function. My rating system is: 5 = no/minimal complaints, very pleased 4 = minor complaints, overall satisfied, but could be better 3 = notable complaints, overall average to ‘meh’ 2 = significant complaints, unhappy and will not keep/use 1 = entirely complaints, misleading descriptions, straight to the trash product.

Very sturdy!
This gate has the many attachments, that way you can install it differently to fit your needs. You can do banister to banister, wall to wall, and banister to wall. It's not pressure mounted and you can install it without drilling into your banister! I was wary buying something that has velcro straps, I thought surely it would become loose with time or I'd never get a tight install. That's not the case with this! If you zoom into my picture you may be able to see on the banister install that there's a small clip to keep the straps from coming undone. It's difficult to open and I doubt anyone under 5 years old will have the strength to get it off. With the strap install, after you've gotten the straps as tight as you can there's a little tool that you use on a small screw to give it a even tighter fit, it's just tightening it a smidge by pulling the straps. (Still no drilling) I recommend reading the instructions closely and inspect each part before starting so you can figure out your install before you begin. The install to our wall I only needed the three spacers, the metal bar, and three screws but the banister side needed quite a bit of the kit to complete. The rubber pieces that is under the the straps keeps a good grip onto the banister, that way there is no slipping or sliding down. Nothing should be loose if done correctly. We've installed two gates to prevent our baby from going up and down the stairs, however we have a autistic 3 year old the gate doesn't keep out. She will climb over it daily to get to her room and she's 35 pounds. While that isn't recommended (I honestly can't keep her from not climbing it) I can attest that the gate is very sturdy and strong, the metal hasn't bent with her weight even with her climbing on it daily. Over time I may need to tighten the straps because of her weight on it daily but the gate is just that good even with her climbing it or trying to forcibly shake it open.

Nice gate, frustrating installation
Not a bad gate, I think it will do what I need it to do but installing it was frustrating. I was using the square banister method and the instructions lack details. The protectors they give you have adhesive on the back but getting the paper off was the first obstacles then they're not very sticky so the pieces kept falling off as I was positioning them. It was almost comical the first couple times, then it was maddening. It's probably a good idea to prep the surface by cleaning it really well first. The pieces that the vertical bars fit into actually fit in both directions and the picture wasn't enough to tell me which way they went until I realized they don't have adhesive so they had to snap on, that indicated how they must go on. Trying to feed the strap around the pieces as they keep falling off (and down the stairs) was tricky. This is a 2 person job! And then the picture doesn't tell you where strap should go in reference to the vertical bar. Do you go under in first to get it tight then over to secure it? Or completely over? The straps are well made and have a couple nice features. There is the clasp that locks over the free end and the screw that tightens it in place. This makes for a secure fit once you've juggled all the pieces together. Latching it is a little tricky because you're trying to line up the bottom and top pegs but releasing it was easy. It's a metal gate so I'm hoping my dogs don't chew through this one!

Good dependable baby/dog gate
Great gate. We actually bought two that was a bargain from what I call an Amazon second chance store. We needed at least one immediately for our German Shepherd puppy 3 years ago and both have lasted flawlessly. However, the top hinge on one did crack and brake but honestly, no fault of Regalo manufacturing. She's an 80 bound dog and very energetic so after standing up on it to look over and greet you it's held up fine. No way I would buy a different gate than this one. Recently another gate was needed for a second one outside. Yes, outside in the elements and it's still going strong. I was very pleased to find the same gate and bought it for a walkway gate. Fact I'm about to buy another one for a new section to an up coming addition to the deck. However, I couldn't understand the frequently returned item message. I read some reviews and let me say, no, it is not that hard to assemble. I can't say much for the instructions. That was to long ago and the new gate I didn't even look at them. It's that easy to set up. You will need basic tools, a level, and probably something to set the hight of your liking at the bottom. From there place and mount the top hinge. The lower hinge falls into place then mount it. Level the gate by the gate hinge hooks that screw in the gate. Once level just mount the top and bottom latch where the gate meets the other side. Then enjoy your new iron looking gate. 5 stars all day long and a great value for what you get at it's cost.

Very durable, safe and strong unlike other competitors.
The Height of this gate goes up to around belly button height for me, I’m 5 foot 1 inch. The size is perfect for the stair case and will fit in most stairway areas. It works great for dog protection both on the stairs and for protecting baby. The dogs can’t slip under or through this gate and it is very durable and safe. The latch functionality is good but takes a little to get used to. There’s a little latch the gate goes under and you have to lift the gate and make sure it goes under that specific part to lock and unlock. Definitely worth the value for the money you pay for this gate. It’s a very strong and reliable gate and I feel very comfortable and safe having my baby upstairs with the gate now because it drills into the wall and is extremely durable.

Good gate, but Regalo has terrible customer service
This gate SEEMS very sturdy- see final comment for more explanation. It is mostly made of metal and has a bit of weight to it. This gate is nice in that it comes with several ways to attach to the wall or banisters. In our case we have two rounded wooden banisters and did not want to drill into them. We used the banister conversion kit that came with the gate and measured very carefully to make sure that all parts were lined up properly. This was difficult, but necessary because the gate will not latch properly if it is even slightly uneven. The gate is almost impossible to open with one hand because you need to squeeze the latch and lift the weight of the entire gate with that one hand on the top corner of the gate. This may be possible to do, but is definitely very very difficult. If my hands are full I usually use my foot under the gate to lift it while squeezing the latch with one hand. This is one of the only gates that is able to be used on an open staircase with no walls to attach to, so that is the reason that we bought it. We used the gate for a little less than a year with no issues, but a few days ago my 22 month old pushed the gate open quickly and broke the plastic hinge that the gate swings open and closed on. This integral part of the gate is PLASTIC and in my opinion broke very easily. I contacted customer service and was told that the warranty lasts 90 DAYS. I need to purchase a replacement part to fix this -which I did. I was then told that it will be 12 BUSINESS DAYS before I should expect to receive it in the mail. After hanging up I thought 12 days is a long time to be without a baby gate so I call back to see if I can get the shipping expedited. I am then told that Regalo never uses expedited shipping because it would cost them too much and if I need the part faster it is recommended that I buy a new baby gate! I was also told during this phone call that the part that I need is on back order and would not be available in the 12 days that I was told previously. I asked how long it would take? I was told that it would not be available for at least a month and a half. I am less than thrilled about the customer service. Does anybody have a baby gate in their house that they don't use for two weeks at a time or better yet a month and a half? I think most people who have baby gates use them daily. When I mentioned my frustration to the Regalo representative on the phone, she stated that there is nothing that she can do and suggested I buy a new baby gate. No thank you! I will not be buying Regalo products ever again!

Looks good, questionable construction
UPDATE - Aug 7th, 2024 I reached out to Regalo to inquire about the warranty and I was told they would NOT warranty the gate because I had bought it as a returned product and to go through Amazon instead. Consider now, does Regalo not warranty their products if purchased as a returned item or open box from a brick and mortar store like Target? What's the difference? With the gate installed, box/packaging disposed of, uninstalling and sending the parts anywhere (ordering and installing a new gate) was not worth my time so I modified the gate to overcome it's shortfalls in my original review. ORIGINAL REVIEW The Regalo Heritage wooden extra wide baby looks nice from a material and color standpoint. Installation is straightforward as with any baby gate. Instructions are easy to follow and hardware is adequate. That said, looks do not make up for function, especially in a product that is supposed to prevent injury or death of kids and or pets. The stress point where you pull the gate up is not mechanically fastened together. It is held with only a small dab of glue (only at the tip of the wood) and slight ribbing. All other corners of the gate are of the same construction. Once the gate frame separates completely, the grey balusters fall out of their retention holes because there is nothing holding them in place. The middle of the gate, where the two frames come together has no way to lock the two pieces together. The frames are always moving during use, making closing the gate tedious to keep everything aligned. In the photo you see I used a zip tie to hold the frames from moving. One each at the top and bottom. This fixed this issue. Every time you close the gate the latch post screws in ever so slightly and eventually needs to be adjusted out again or the gate will not latch well. Adding some thread locker to keep the latch post from screwing in should stop this. These issues would have easily been discovered if this gate was tested before commercial production. I learned all of this in less than 30 days of ownership and use. While there is a warranty, it is not worth anything because the construction is in complete question along with the safety claims given the construction techniques used in the gates production.

Great gate to go at the top and bottom of stairs.
Outstanding and perfect for our need. This gate was simple to install and gets the job done. Has a great look that goes good with any design. Reaches almost to the top of our railings, which is important for safety. The feel is sturdy, it's simple to operate and easy to correct any irregularities in fit. We had a need for an extra round post fastener and thr manufacturer sent one out to us at no charge! Outstanding product with great support. Very happy with the purchase. We own 6 different gates from this company and are very pleased with all of them.

Looks good, slightly difficult to unlock
The Regalo gate is a nice looking gate that does its job of preventing my 18 month old going down the stairs. Installation needs professional skills as one side needs to be drilled for support (if you have a wall). Its easy to remove it with one hand, however, for locking it requires a lot of effort. The instructions were quite good and the parts were over supplied so it was useful.

Great product, tall and wide gate.
This is a great gate. We use it to keep our large dogs contained inside. It is a great high gate and I LOVE how it doesn’t touch/scratch the floor. The opening is extra wide too which is great. Only complaint would be the instructions to assemble weren’t great.
