Something New
While this retreads old ground - magic is dying! - only out heroes can save us! The new twists - Wonder Woman leading the team, the appearance of Detective Chimp, Blue Devil and a heroic Man-Bat lift this out of the ordinary. (And the identity of the villain comes as a genuine surprise)

A 1st class graphic novel!
Started buying and reading graphic novels again recently after 25 year break when came across box with my '88 editions of Dark Knight, Watchmen, '89 Punisher War Journels,' 93 Death Of Superman, '93 Aliens vs Predator graphic novels I read again and really enjoyed this J. L. A. offshoot story, good combination of superhero and paranormal comic book fiction!

“Justice League Dark – The Last Age of Magic” collects issues #1-3 and #5-7 of the new Wonder Woman-led Justice League Dark, one of the new teams established after the events of “Justice League – No Justice”.The opening three-part story established the mission for the new team, as more cosmic beings attempt to break on through from the other side, and one of DC’s oldest heroes – figuratively, literally and metaphorically speaking – goes over to the Dark Side. There’s also yet another dark secret from Wonder Woman’s past that we’ve never seen before but comes in handy for the current crisis – and I think we’ve seen enough of late to know that that’s where were heading.Issue #4 is part of a crossover story that delves into that thing from Wonder woman’s past, and the next two-parter (#5 & #6) has got an awful lot of stuff that appears to come out of no story I have seen before, so must – I hope – be covered in the crossover (which is not scheduled for release for another month or more!).#7 is a sort of tribute to the old DC mystery/horror anthology titles, with Kirk Langstrom taking the role of the narrator, but the short stories are all related to the ongoing crisis, and develop plot-threads that will lead us into the next volume and another big story. There is continuity like you wouldn’t believe mixed up in this story, stretching back to Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, as we revisit that séance where Zatarra and Sargon died – and let’s say just that that story isn’t over yet, at least for some of the dead characters, and Constantine and the Swamp Thing are back together again for the last time here too, at least for one of them. When you (apparently) kill-off a character of that magnitude, then you know a crisis must be on the horizon, and you don’t need the Phantom Stranger to pop in and tell you there’s one coming (though he does); just go and read “Flash War” for a very big signpost.Anyway, this reminded me of all the good bits of the Alan Moore Swamp Thing and the supernatural/horror revival that it spawned for DC and Vertigo, but with none of the bad bits – comic books have risen and advanced a bit since those days. This is good enough that I don’t even care that a crisis will come and asterisk it all up again – live for the moment! Live In the moment – it’s only a comic book!
