A Great Worldview Primer for Discipleship
As my title suggests, Colson's book would be a great worldview primer for discipleship purposes. In a day and age where people believe that creation is an accident and God is a non-issue, we have to begin by demonstrating that it is more logical to look to a Creator than to presume that all of creation is a coincidence, what Colson called pre-evangelism.To take it a step further, many people in the church don't even have a Biblical worldview. This book equips you to begin spiritual formation of one's worldview -- and will help alter your own as well.Having Nancy Pearcey on board for this book is a God-send. Colson's past work has had a tendency to be rather dry and laborious. Pearcey's contribution is a noticeable difference as the book flows and reads very well. Every section is broken up into smaller sections that are typically no more than a few pages, which makes it easy to set goals and get through this book -- don't let it's size discourage you! While I sometimes felt Colson was far too staunchly evangelical, I'm glad I read it and recommend it for anyone struggling to define or help others realize a proper Christian worldview.

Good resource, but too long
Colson and Pearcey have put together an outstanding cultural apologetic for Christianity. The key to cultural influence, according to Colson is to begin with the understanding that Christianity is a complete worldview or life system that addresses all facets of life and reality. Using the creation, fall, redemption (and restoration) model for Biblical truth and revelation, Colson puts forth chapter after chapter of evidence, analogies and personal stories to demonstrate that Christianity is the only worldview that comports to reality. How Now Shall We Live is a wealth of information that defends Christianity in the realms of science, philosophy, religion, art, music - you name it! Colson believes that if an individual begins with a Christian worldview, centered on Christ and grounded in the truth of Scripture, they will be equipped to address every personal and cultural issue with a reasonable and rationale solution that is actually effective in changing not only a person, but a nation as well. The only knock on this book is that it really is too long. While Colson's stories are intriguing and informative, they are really not necessary to the arguments presented in the book - the book could be shortened by almost 100 pages making it far more attractive to the average reader who wouldn't think of touching a nearly 500 page monster like this!Great read for the thinking Christian or any Christian who wants to be better equipped for raising children and engaging the culture for Christ.

Good observations, but narrow recommendations
I haven't finished this book. I have read several chapters near the beginning, and several others at the end. Sorry for reviewing a half-read book. I don't entirely dislike it, but I don't feel motivated to finish it. Here's why:While I often agree with the authors, I don't think their observations and recommendations are as one-size-fits-all as they imagine. The cultural commission they recommend may look different for everyone- it need not be loud and take place in the public sphere. It may be quiet and relational, or something else entirely. There are many ways in which the Spirit empowers us to offer a taste of God's Kingdom to those on Earth. It is very interesting to read this book 15 years after it was written- the culture now is not the same as it was then, even in such a short time.

This is a very good book. It tells us what has happened in terms of worldviews. At the same time, it has a excellent defense of the Christian worldview.
