Good yoga book
This book was recommended to me by my teacher, it was the first yoga book she had, years ago. She thought it would be good for me as it has suggested sequences you can work through, starting off with a few postures and working up to spending longer on your practice. I really like the illustrations and the wording is also straightforward and easy to understand. It's a very comprehensive book for people new to yoga, explaining the importance of breathing, diet etc, stressing the importance of the foundations of yoga. If you are only interested in the physical side of yoga, then you can take what you want from the book. Sivananda yoga recommends starting a yoga practice with relaxation, then breathing and then warming up with sun salutations, followed by other postures. I've found this very helpful and the best way to shape yoga practice. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in yoga who wants a complete picture of yoga and who would like to have a sequence of exercises to follow.

Excellent photos and instruction, but I need the poses to be broken down further, so I don't use it much.

Gorgeous book for yoga practitioners at all levels, newcomer to advanced
This is a beautiful book, with gorgeous instructional photos and helpful drawings. This routine of poses will not intimidate beginners and will inspire advanced yoga practitioners. Each of these exercises show total newcomers how to start specific poses, mid-level practitioners how to progress through them and advanced users how to reach each asana's pinnacle. I learned yoga from this softcover book and my latest order of it is my third copy. They're well made but I've referred to each so often that the spine starts cracking and the pages I most refer to become dog-eared. I would like to see this book published with a spiral spine so the user can lay it open to the pages they're following. It should also stand up better in that format. I'd also like to see it made in a larger format. There is so much to take in and learn from that bigger pages will provide better spacing. And bigger photographs will only enhance their beauty. The book encompasses more than exercise routines. It also talks about the philosophy behind yoga, provides related information about the human body, offers breathing exercises and holds short sections on asanas for people passing through life's cycles -- ranging from children to pregnant women to less-abled seniors. However, people with special requirements should look elsewhere for a full yoga-exercise routine.

Sivananda Companion to Yoga
What a helpful (and sometimes daunting) book. The photographs are clear and the instructions precise and detailed. I may never be able to do the Crow but it won't be for lack of good intstruction!
