Very good (supports condenser microphone)
Fun to use, mostly easy to learn the controls. For the price you get a good quality, and light weight tool. It supports my Condenser microphone and there's no need for phantom power (has a phantom power switch already). This product has power options for either battery or cord powered. (Includes batteries but not a power cord, you will have to order a cord separately). The product portable. Plenty of effects and options to choose from. Has good auto-tune. 5 stars.

Lots of useful features in a compact space
The VT4 is definitely a great tool for any vocal performance, and does a great job with special effects as well. There were several features I didn't expect but are great to have. - Pitch correction includes minor chords, and it works well in coordination with the vocoding. Being able to set the strength of the pitch correction is definitely a plus, especially when you are playing with glides or other vocal techniques. - Vocoding works well on it's own, and through USB you can set your own carrier sound. - There's a noise canceling function for killing feedback loops - There are four variations for things like echo, vocoder, harmony and megaphone - You can run mono out with a dry version of the sound on the other stereo out - You can use this as an audio capture and playback over USB - Harmonizer uses pitch and formant, to give a different feel to your backing vocals. Overall it feels solid, sounds great and has a lot more depth than first glance. The smaller size and lack of a giant blinky green border make this feel more like a real vocal tool. The only thing I wish it had was another audio in for carrier sounds on the vocoder, or for mixing in a stereo mix for things like Karaoke. You CAN get that when using a computer, but I don't always want to use a computer.

Ground loop issue with MG10XU & Balanced Mogami cables.
As others have mentioned, the device feels a bit flimsy. For those who plan on using this as a travel device, it definitely wouldn't survive a drop off a table, or being banged around, so using a carry case is definitely recommended for you road warriors. On the matter of the ground loop issue, while connecting the VT-4 and powering via USB with a ground isolated cable on both the MG10XU and the VT-4, I was getting an excessive amount of noise that would come through on my headset and speakers. Once I powered the VT-4 externally, not relying on my computers USB bus for power, the issue went away. This doesn't necessarily mean that it's an issue with the device, it's just that the combination of the two led to this problem I was experiencing. USB power that comes from your motherboard is not always a reliable means for providing consistent power to your devices. There's ground loop isolation devices that you can purchase to correct this issue but for me the simplest solution was to just not power it via my computer directly. The VT-4 albeit an expensive device, provides quality effects that you'd expect from Roland.

voice changer
I am a published author, and I decided to do my own audiobook version. I needed something to help me flip from one type of voice to another. I'm not as good as professional readers, so I need a bit of techno help. This does the job. I bought a mic that was probably too good for what I want because the Roland/mic combo was so good it picked up some elements of my voice I didn't know I had. So I have had this for a while now and I've had fun monkeying with the dials and knobs, searching for the character voices I need. So my review is limited to just audiobook recording because I am far behind the people who have posted other reviews. Perhaps someday I will plug this into my keyboard and see what it does. In the meantime, for anyone looking to do character work, this with a good mic will do the job. I love this.

Awesome Vocal Transformer
The Roland VT-4 Vocal Transformer is totally awesome. It works great with batteries or with USB power. It works great without being connected to a music keyboard. Just connect a dynamic microphone and a pair of headphones to it and you are good to go. All the voice transformation options worked great.

Quality not improved enough since VT-1. Suitable for DJ/parties/karaoke, not home recording.
I bought the original Boss VT-1 when it came out in 1996. It was the first time sophisticated phase-vocoder hardware was really available at a consumer price point, and it was a lot of fun. Now, 25 years later, we've got the 4th generation unit, and while it's got some new tricks (true vocoder, harmonizer), and its style looks more professional, sound quality of the basic effects hasn't improved much. Build quality is actually down; the VT-1 was an all-metal tank, the VT-4 is all plastic. This box still has a place, and that place is parties. If you DJ parties, you'll find a use for this. It's even more fun than it's predecessors. The user interface is terrible. No, a bit beyond terrible. There are lots of options and effects presets, but without the manual, you'll be lost. All of the best stuff is accessed via combinations of buttons, not all of which are logical or easily discoverable, and there is no user feedback. For $249, this thing should at least have a 90's era 2-line LCD display like the Boss SE-50/70 and a settings dial, seriously. The only way to confirm you've selected the preset you want is to try it out, which is bad for live performance! "Testing, testing, nope, one second, I'll find it..." If you're thinking about buying this for studio use, forget it. There are software plugins for your DAW that can do everything this box can do, much better, cheaper, and with a good user interface experience. For example, the classic functionality of the pitch and formant sliders that lets you do troll voices, robots, gender bending, chipmunks on helium, etc... is done better by at least 3 plugins. I think SoundToys LittleAlterBoy does it the best, with the fewest artifacts. And if you need clean results, you have to have a noise gate and compressor in your chain too, and this is all made easier with software.

Great for live performances as well as recording
I was using Scarlett interface and it was good but didn't support stand-alone use for performing, it always had to be connected to USB power with a data connection. This unit does both, operating on USB power or batteries. I connect the output to and amp when performing and the USB connection when recording. The effects really help out, I like the chorus and reverb, not sure yet about the auto-tune. Still, 5 stars.

Doesn’t give studio quality sound!
I wanted the auto tune effect for my rap vocals. It doesn’t come with a power supply which is crazy considering the price point it’s at. It also doesn’t give studio quality sound no good for recording. And I brought it primarily for recording. So it’s no good for that . It’s very simple to use yes . This is a poorly engineered product . Roland for decades has made quality audio equipment don’t know what happened here . I returned it and brought a tc helicon voice live touch unit 2 instead. Brought it used it’s not manufactured anymore but sounds awesome gives you nice auto tune effects .

Amazing quality!
The quality of this thing is outstanding. Despite the simple layout, there are so many different effects and combinations to play with. I've had a lot of fun playing around with different effects, plus I use it as my primary interface for my PC and my microphone sounds great.
