Hercules....more like the little engine that couldn't.
Review of the Hercules 6220 "Heavy Duty" Portable Air Compressor purchased through Amazon September 2013. Let me preface the review by saying, this air compressor replaced one which was part of a battery booster/charger combination. Naturally, coming from this setup, expectations ran pretty low, but functionality remained a top priority. Therefore, I took a gamble seeing as though no one had yet reviewed the Hercules 6220 "Heavy Duty" air compressor and didn't know what to expect. The unit has two power switches, one for the light(four leds) and the other for the air compressor. The air hose has the screw on nozzle adapter for tire stems and it comes with three inflation adapters. The air compressor is powered through the cigarette lighter versus the vehicle's car battery. The power cord is approximately nine feet in length and the air hose is about twenty eight inches long. The power cord does not have its own fuse and depends on the vehicle's fuse to blow in case of a shortage or circuit overload. As expected, the air pressure gauge is between 2-3 psi off from an accurate reading. Also, the entire gauge vibrates anytime the compressor is on since both of the screws attaching the air gauge to the rest of unit have wiggled out completely. This makes it difficult to see the pressure reading while the unit is running. The highest psi reading on the air gauge is 100, however realistically speaking, this an unlikely number to achieve when the vehicle's weight is on the ground.Per the recommendations of the manufacture "allow air compressor to cool for 10 minutes after 10 minutes of continuous operation". The outside of the box reads 12V 100psi, however the darn thing could barely inflate a van tire to 70 psi in twenty minutes. Eventually, the unit started to overheat and was immediately shut off. I shudder to think how long it would take inflate a tire to 100 psi.At the end of the day, this air compressor is good for smaller applications, such as a car tire, inflatable balls, raft and perhaps some truck tires. On the other hand, customer service (wholesale vip warehouse) was quick to answer a couple of preliminary questions pertaining to the air compressor which is the sole reason for the two star vote, otherwise I would have given it one star. That's my $.02, now please spend it wisely.UPDATE 10.21.13The air pressure gauge stopped working and reads 10psi when the unit in not on.UPDATE 01.31.14.The unit stopped working today. :-( While on, the unit would make humming and whining sounds as if the motor was running, however, air was not coming from the screw-on chuck. Therefore, with else nothing to lose, decided to disassemble the unit and found metal shavings on the inside which are indicative of a gear failure. At the end of the day, Hercules ought to be ashamed of himself....ugh.
