To love a classic
My son was reading his hardback edition and taking too long. I remembered I had this one and passed him! I missed not having “pictures “, sometimes they helped tell the story. It didn’t matter, I borrowed my son’s book for those! This is a great classic to own at an excellent price.

Now, that's a good read!
I've seen the shows, watched the movies, then finally started reading the books. They are very enjoyable to read; love the character development and the intricate plots! Not too wordy -- just really good, wholesome, entertaining stories.

More like a blog than a book
I do love the new Sherlock Holmes shows from the BBC and eagerly await new episodes however this book read much more like a blog than a book to me. It was worth the read but definitely not what I was expecting.

Old timeless classics need no review. Simply outstanding.

{ Return of Sherlock Holmes } 4 stars & 4/10 hearts. I enjoyed seeing Sherlock’s ‘return to life.’ I’m sorry for Doyle, but I’m personally glad that he kept writing. ;) This collection holds two of my favourite stories: The Three-Quarter, and The Three Students. I also really loved Jack from the Abbey Grange mystery... and Mr. Hilton from the Dancing Men mystery. I don’t think I’ve mentioned it before, but Sherlock does use a lot of lying/deception/trickery, which I don’t agree with. As usual, there is smoking, drinking, language (ranging from “heavens” to what I call actual swearing). Longer content list below. I enjoyed all the deduction and detective-work; it’s hard to say which book shows it best, because each story differs! But I still feel like this one shows Holmes at his best. So far, anyhow. ;) He really does care for people, deep inside, I’m sure; and he can be very kind and understanding. He’s a complex, interesting man, admirable in many things. And as usual, I love the humour. ;) It’s particularly good in this book! Empty House: murder; card-playing. Norwood Builder: apparent murder. Dancing Men: attempted suicide; billiard playing; apparent murder. Solitary Cyclist: man holds woman & tries to kiss her. Priory School: murder; illegitimate child. Black Peter: physical abuse; rather disturbing murder. Milverton: murder. Six Napoleons: murder. Pince-Nez: murder; suicide. Abbey Grange: Rather disturbing murder; mention that God is for divorce; mention of dog torture; mention that a married woman & a man met (but it is stated that they did nothing wrong). Second Stain: mention of a mistress. A Favourite Quote: “‘Exactly. Since it is morally justifiable, I have only to consider the question of personal risk. Surely a gentleman should not lay much stress upon this, when a lady is in most desperate need of his help?’” A Favourite Beautiful Quote: “[T]he heath-covered countryside, with the glowing clumps of flowering gorse, seemed all the more beautiful to eyes which were weary of the duns and drabs and slate-greys of London. Holmes and I walked along the broad, sandy road inhaling the fresh morning air, and rejoicing in the music of the birds and the fresh breath of the spring. From a rise of the road on the shoulder of Crooksbury Hill, we could see the grim Hall bristling out from amidst the ancient oaks, which, old as they were, were still younger than the building which they surrounded.” A Favourite Humorous Quote: “‘[H]ave you any suspicion yet as to the cause of the disappearance? I don’t think that among all our cases I have known one where the motives are more obscure. Surely you don’t really imagine that he may be kidnapped in order to give information against his wealthy uncle?’ “‘I confess, my dear Watson, that that does not appeal to me as a very probable explanation. It struck me, however, as being the one which was most likely to interest that exceedingly unpleasant old person.’”
