Disorganized, sort of comprehensive, and definitely overpriced vanity project
I wanted to get deeper into vintage Rolex collecting, so I bought the Mondani books on the Submariner + Seadweller (this one), the GMT Master, and the Daytona. All of them arrived from Italy to the US faster than estimated, within about a week. The books are differently organized and with different editors, and the Daytona one is the best of the bunch, while this one is the worst. One great feature of this (as well as the GMT and Daytona books) is the price guide brochure which accompanies the book. It allows you to eyeball all the references over time, and quickly see which ones are more rare and desirable. The price list also helps you see if some sales listing is a good deal or not, with the caveat that prices fluctuate over time. These two books (volumes) are in my opinion poorly organized. Volume I starts with the Seadweller, which is a 1960s watch and a more obscure product line that comes after the Submariner (an early 1950s watch). Volume I then contains the history of the no-date Submariner references which for some reason are titled "James Bond". Volume II is about the Submariner Date variants. There are no big-picture overviews of the Submariner family or the reference groups within it. This is basically a non-chronological pile of individual model references.I highly recommend that you read or watch the Hodinkee reference articles and videos about the Submariner and Seadweller. They give a much better overview of these product families and how they evolved over time. Only then these books start to make more sense as you try to fill in more details.I found a few problems and errors. For example, the dial variants (marks) of the Deepsea 116660 are incorrect. I have a Mk1 and others online concur with what it looks like. It looks different from what this book considers Mk1. The list of Submariner references includes a Bamford-modified Sub for Guido Mondani with his company's logo, which has no place in a serious reference work. These reference books are about what Rolex made and what's factory original. Bamford and others can customize any Rolex and reduce its value. Also, many individual references, some very commonplace and mundane, are marked as Mondani Collection, which makes little sense. Are they boasting that they own multiple Submariners? Selling them (in which case why list the common ones)? Lastly, the Bond NATO strap is shown with the wrong colors (it is now widely accepted that the strap is not monochromatic). Given how intricate Rolex's model variations are, I wonder how many other things are subtly or brutally wrong. Not recommended. There are better guides online, on respected blogs and forums. I am not planning to go through the effort of returning these two volumes, and I hope to gain some obscure insights from them over time. For me, this will remain as one of many references on the Submariner and Seadweller.
