Calming and Thought Provoking
I really enjoyed this movie. I thought the exploration of suicide, which is such a sensitive topic, was done well. Sometimes we feel desperate and wish that we were somewhere else and sometimes suicide feels like a logical choice, even for children of a very young age. I felt bad for the father who had seemed to have lost everything and I'm wondering what kind of life he had and where his wife was. Throughout life we all think about what it must feel to die because that is all of our futures - we all have to die someday. It's sometimes unpleasant to think about, so why and in what circumstances would we desire death? That's kind of a deep question, but one of the reasons I like this film.We - the human race - need to love each other more in our families if we can. If not, do our best to help out where we can and love our neighbors.I also loved the area where they filmed; it was very green, lush, and wet.

Beautiful, thoughtful, uneven and always engaging.
The performances are natural and feel organic. They fit well with the meandering pace and tone. I've read a handful of reviews state that the film is almost dream-like. That seems pretty spot on. The style reminds me a lot of Blue Caprice. There is a story there, but the director seems more concerned with setting a mood and watching the characters. It works when that is the case. Really well actually. Not so much when the film feels the need to service the plot involving a stolen gun, which sometimes feels forced, but ultimately the message is there.Regardless, this is an engaging, beautiful, thoughtful and confident film and I look forward to seeing what else everyone involved works on next.

Good movie
This movie was in-depth, and one would need to follow along with the plot to completely understand the actions.

waste of time
what a waste of time. Very little dialog. mostly just young boys playing with dead animals and wrestling. couldn't even begin to tell you what the point of this movie was. Here's my plot review - lol. boys play with dead bird, boys play with gun, small boy found dead under bridge, teen boys wrestling, dog goes missing, dog found tied to brick, brick thrown through window, wrestling, boy gets mad. credits.

Cinematography is stunning. Characters are nuanced.
I think that overall the film is shot quite well, and I love how the director made the decision to play out beats longer than your traditional drama. I also love that the producer allowed the director to do so. That all being said this movie is slow and incredibly character driven--it isn't for everyone. You have to be in the mood for such a movie to enjoy it, and I quite enjoyed it. I think that they captured the children very well. They were incredibly nuanced.Furthermore, the cinematography was stunning. A cinematographer to look out for!

haunting
The scene with the two brothers on the bicycle with its haunting music is unforgettable. I think Nietzche once said something to the effect that visuals support music and not the other way around ...

Boring!!!
Boring and slow. I get it, but I even started reading my iPad trying to wait for the end to come. It was so depressing and worse. I hated it, really. It was something that I do not know why we kept it on. I usually pick really great films, TV series, and documentaries. This one did not fit that bill. I am sorry that I feel this way. I do not like having to write a negative review. But ... And the opening scene I could not watch. I know it is a metaphor, but I have a real phobia and I was scared like crazy when I first saw the opening. Simply waited for my partner to say it was over. And then throughout the whole movie I was on edge expecting "it" to come back. Nope, disliked a lot.

Good movie!
Usually I am skeptical of child actors, but this one provided great actors with ability to project feelings. First I thought of a 3 (as some parts of the movie are a bit confusing - such as the desire to kill his best friend at the end movie). Regardless, it is indeed a 4 as it kept me watching and was not boring as others!

Tragic Americana look at masculinity
Amazing film. An examination on the tragic, self-destructive state of masculinity.Best film of 2014 that little saw (including me). Had this blu ray lying around but never got around to it until now and wish I had voted for it in time for the movies of the year here. It's like a more arthouse and thought-provoking version of Stand By Me or Mud. Set against the beautiful yet harsh American wilderness. Unsentimental, honest, naturalistic performances by Ryan Jones and Nathan Varnson who play the brothers. Bolstered by Nick Bentgen's stunning cinematography (looks brilliant on blu ray) and Robert Donne's evocative ambient music.Cried a few times. Not so much because of what you expect, but because of the general atmosphere of frustration for how limited the expression of masculinity can be. There's a yearning that isn't being met amongst the boys and men here. The shot of a man holding a boy's hand in one scene exemplifies this.Feel the first and last shot viewed by themselves tell a lot about how nature sets a more physical expectation of men but they're so desperate for an emotional connection now.

Compulsory viewing for every student teacher ... and perhaps every parent!!!!
This is a very intelligent thought provoking film that deals with teenage problems. It is a MUST SEE for every parent, teacher, youth worker etc etc as it really gets into the minds of how teenagers (12 and 15 year old or so) deal with tragic problems. It is an insight into youth culture and behavior at a very ordinary level. It is certainly not melodramatic nd some may consider it a little boring but look at it deeply and it certainly is not! This film is perhaps not for everyone but it can be enjoyed on many levels. However in my opinion as an educator it should be compulsory viewing for every student teacher ... and perhaps every parent!!!!
