il Mare: A Love Story

It's a beautiful love story with a tragic plot and a happy ending. Kind of confusing but that's what makes this movie such a classic for me. I think this movie was modelled from Frequency but instead of Father/Son protagonist, they used a man/woman Not quite a love story as it is only the guy that fell in love with the woman. From the woman's perspective, he is probably just a good friend and a distraction from her own personal problems. The movies play on regret and remorse is what it such a powerful and classic movie for me.

So I watched the Lakehouse first, then the original Il Mare. Being Korean American (speak, read & write) I can say the translation was mostly on (though there's alot of complaints re translations in the reviews?) I don't know about the Chinese voice dub but agree that would ruin the mood/vibe of the film.I didn't find Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves to have that connection, as much as they're both good in the movie.As for Il Mare, it's definitely got the Korean 'han' type of mood that is prevalent in our culture. The sorrow, sadness, longing...I believe it runs in our DNA lol. Anyways, I gave it 4 stars b/c I also didn't find Jun Ji Yun and Lee Jung Jae to really have that connection either...no chemistry. It felt like they literally were acting separately & pasted together...beautiful music, cinematography though--much more artistic than Lakehouse.As a side note I found it funny that the Korean version has the cute little fluffy dog while the American version has the bigger cute dog...the cutesy dog wouldn't work with Keanu for some reason? I can't see him snuggling with Cola!

I admit I’m a sucker for Asian romance movies and Il mare is one of the best It features a good storyline great acting and an emotional but happy ending The lake house is the American remake of Il mare and while I like both movies Il mare is definitely the better movie out of the two The two lead actors are better and have great chemistry there are less filler side characters and the ending makes more senseOverall Il mare is a great romance drama with great acting a good Storyline and An emotional happy ending Whether You’ve seen the lake house or not Il mare is definitely worth the watch It’s about time that it’s available for purchase on prime video My verdict just buy it It’s definitely worth the purchaseHighly recommended

The scenery is beautiful and the story is fabuloulsy romantic. I watched Il Mare when it first came out in the theater. It's a rewarding experience to watch it for the second time. Amazon did a nice job of giving trivia which I found interesting - On August 31, 2002, Il Mare was swept away by Typhoon Rusa. There is a new breakwater and summer sealine and the fromer poistion of Il Mare. Exact coordinates of Il Mare were: (37"44' 16.00"N, 126"17'21.50"E).

I watched the Lake House version and at that time I liked the movie. I never knew it was a remake of Il Mare a korean movie. Comparing the two, this original version is way better than the remake. I love this movie.

This movie was a complete drag. Very confusing to follow, translation was horrible, actors and story was not captivating. I didn't feel a strong sense of emotional pull in the relationship between the two main characters. Only reason why I'm giving this movie one star is because of the house and the concept of the story. I watch a lot of Korean movies and this was a huge disappointment. I felt nothing while watching this movie and it felt dreadful to finish.

Great time travel (ish) movie.If you like Korean drama and sci-fi you will NOT be disappointed.If you DON'T like subtitles you WILL be disappointed.If you DON'T like poorly translated subtitles you WILL also be disappointed.Clean movie (no nudity/sex).There is frequent drinking and smoking cigarettes, and a brief scene where some blood is shown

It was a pre-owned dvd. I was happy to have found it as I had no success in finding it for Region 1. Yes, it played well, but it was very dark, lacking visual clarity. It didn’t play like an original dvd. It was inexpensive, so I threw it out. You get what you pay for ..... this time, anyway. I was surprised that it was Chinese audio. It wasn’t widescreen as stated.

Absolutely love this movie - much better than the American remake but, unfortunately, the subtitles let it down very much. They were very hard to follow - the person responsible obviously didn't speak English very well. I originally saw this movie on Australia's SBS channel & the subtitles were very good. So watch the movie without the subtitles - you will probably follow it better (possibly not needed anyway).

This is a good film. It is much better than its American derivative The Lakehouse, both in the acting and in the narrative.Not being a Korean speaker, however, I had to rely on the subtitles on the DVD ( Il Mare(2000) Wonderful Korean Drama (Eng Subs) ). Unfortunately the quality of the subtitling varied from quite poor English to utterly nonsensical collections of English words. This movie took me by surprise. It is intelligent, well-acted and perfectly paced. The only flaws are with the overall quality of the DVD, which visually is all right, but the subtitles are a little iffy (but comprehensible) in certain spots. But the movie is so fantastic that it is well worth it. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Korean cinema and looking for a really good love story.
