Almost turned me into a photojournalist
I read Kenneth Kobré's "Photojournalism: The Professional's Approach" a few years back when I was an enthusiastic amateur photographer. Kobré's love of his profession shines through everywhere in the book. His gritty description of the life of a photojournalist actually made me consider a career change and a life as a photographer. The book has three kinds of chapters: chapters about specific assignments such as spot news and feature, about technical aspects such as strobe (flash), photo editing and the some suggestion about what you should have in your camera bag, and more philosophical topics such as law and ethics. All chapters feature mountains of practical advice and dozens of wonderful pictures. Kobre's tone is friendly, guiding and warmly authorative, never patronizing or trite.I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who is considering of or studying to become a photojournalist. Not being one myself, I don't know whether those already in the field know all this stuff or if they too might find something useful. People doing photography as a hobby, particularly street photography and the like, are likely to find the book useful and exciting too, but the highish price might be harder to stomach. I certainly think it was well worth it, though.

ottimo manuale
Molto soddisfatto

Almost "The One Textbook" for Photojournalism
I have been using Kobre's excellent book as a text for teaching Introductory Photojournalism ever since the first edition; it has always been the best source out there for teaching and has improved with each edition. I consider the current (5th Edition) is be almost "The ONE Textbook" for learning everything you need to know for understanding and practicing Photojournalism. A bit more on layout and design for Picture Stories would make it perfect. In my full-time job I've been a full-time staff photographer with a large daily newspaper for over 30 years, and still, I come across something new with every reading of this book.

Definitely a must have for any beginner
Excellent book! I put off buying it for over a year because I thought it was a bit pricey, but less than a month after reading it one of my photos made the front page of our local newspaper. The book covers everything you need to know to get started, topics include...- covering news, features, sports, politics & contemporary issues- narrative picture stories- finding features & catching candids- environmental & interpretive portraits- creative use of the strobe- digital shooting & darkroom techniques (Photoshop tutorials included)- concept photography & illustrations- newsroom politics- picture editing- shooting within the bounds of the law- controversial pictures & ethical discussions- expanded history of photojournalism- freelancing & business practices- internships and afterIf bought new the book also comes with a DVD featuring multiple documentary film shorts which to me is worth $20 alone.

Not necissary for courses.
Good book, but nothing that you can't obtain from going to class and listening to the teacher/googling. That is if you already know photography and journalism. Still, you can learn photography by picking up a camera, shooting, and then googling the rest. If your teacher asks you have this book. Get it cheap, or don't at all. I barely touched my book.

Like the one I used in college a few years back
This is an update of the classic Kobre book that was required back in the day. I needed an updated one for my students to get their fire burning again. Light them up, I am counting on it.

This Book is Dated
There are lots of info for a college course, but info in there are very dated. Nonetheless, you always get the basic from a timeless advice and suggestions.

great read!
I bought this book as text for a photojournalism class. It's a great (and easy) read, with fantastic photos and great tips, and definitely a worthwhile addition to any photographer's collection. I don't think it makes much difference which edition you buy.

Good Condition for a paperback
Was in pretty great shape for a paperback book. Not a costly textbook either! Was very inexpensive for a college kid budget!
