specialized whitework
This book is a comprehensive guide to Mountmellick Embroidery. The print and stitch diagrams are too small for the senior citizens.

Rediscovering old crafts
On one of my many (hobbies/crafts) internet trawls I came across Mountmellick Embroidery. It was nothing short of a revelation as a large part of my family are indeed from Ireland. I realised that the embroidered cloths etc. I had seen in relatives houses were indeed pieces of this work. I'd long admired them and some years ago tried to emulate what I thought the craft was in a tablecloth. Nice try, but honestly rubbish! So here is the book that has made my new hobby possible. It's almost a love affair at first sight. Mountmellick embroidery is basically a form of textured white work inspired by nature. The designs are usually floral and based on plants that grew in the local Mountmellick area. The diagrams and instructions make for very easy reading and to follow too. If you already dabble with embroidery its likely you will have most of the tools to create Mountmellick. There is also a very interesting section on the history of this art and how it was almost lost. A warning for many art forms I think. There a number of projects to start you off and I think this is a clear case of making sure you can walk before you run. I'm using white crochet cotton to start off with as obtaining Mountmellick thread is somewhat tedious. So it's started me off on my 2011 Christmas tablecloth project and will also be used as design aspects of other hobbies I engage in such as sewing, crochet, quilting etc.I'd recommend this book in a flash!
