Most of the drama of these stories is in the telling. They are old stories which are meant to be told in front of the fire, not modern, not titillating, not polished, not sensational. They give insight into a wide range of older histories and legends so are more of an introduction than any definitive end of the search.Years ago, listening to poems and stories at the local Scottish Society I used to think that most of Scottish literature had themes centered around the need to be safe, warm and well fed but these stories show much wider horizons than do tales from the more recently impoverished state of the Scottish people.

If you understand that these stories were written for children a very long time ago by simple people you can appreciate them. Gripping page-turners they are not. They are typically very repetitive and some of them don't make any sense at all. However, if you are interested in this kind of folk tale you will enjoy them. Children will enjoy them.

Interesting - take time to read. Read one so far.

An interesting read. A physical copy with easy access to the glossary would have been better than a digital edition.

and great tales on the inside. The binding and quality of this book are excellent also. I'm so glad this was reprinted, and so well too.As for the tales, interesting and enjoyable for young and old alike. I like reading of folk tales, for myself and to the kids, because I think one can learn about human character and behavior through them, not to mention the beliefs of a culture.Wonderful!

I love the legendary, authentic tales in their uncut versions. Wonderful to find out what tales have tracked down through the years using one of the original tales as their base.

Such a lovely book that can read to children before going to bed.
