THIS works!
Cats jump, right? And they're smart enough to do it behind your back. I tried the expensive deterrent that supposedly senses their motion and hisses air at them. It made them jump down, but as many reviewers of that product found, the sensor was very unreliable and the can of air depleted quickly. Reluctantly, I paid more to try these. As other reviewers note, the noise this emits is loud - even on the soft setting. And I get that some folks don't want to scare their poor kitties. BUT I really hate feet that have tracked through kitty litter walking over my stove and food-prep counters. THIS PRODUCT WORKED!! The beauty is that you set it and leave the room so the cats trigger it when you're away - and get deterred. I found my cats only needed 2-3 events of setting this thing off to avoid the area entirely. Better yet, the learning lasts. After the initial triggering, I've seen no paw prints on my counters or stainless stove in over 3 months! I don't mind that I had to frighten the little sneaks temporarily to get great results! Caution: you can accidentally trigger it too. I learned quickly to put a reminder in the doorway to the room where the device was armed so I'd remember to carefully turn it off before setting it off!

LOUD, UNBEARABLY LOUD BUT SO SO EFFECTIVE
These are so loud, it actually is a piercing painful sound in your ears. It took about 3 days and my cat won't even look at the stove top and surrounding counters. Amazing how fast it works. This would be great for other uses like keeping critters away from nice plants/vegetable outside. I cannot vouch for its water resistance but under a covered area I think it would be great. also could be used in front of a patio door in a hotel room. Expensive but totally worth the cost, very well made

These are great at training cats to stay off counters! (Until they stop working)
**Update** Obviously mine are 3 years old but they no longer work.We moved to a new house and I couldn't figure out how to set them up without going off all day long so they sat for a couple years in the junk drawer. I finally figured it out but they no longer work when I went to set them up. Super bummed. They were great at first. So first and foremost- I hate spending money!! The thought of spending $130 on alarms to keep my cats off the counters was so excruciating. Anyway, after I put my oldest cat down we adopted a kitten to fill in the missing kitty void. Well, our other cat taught the kitten that there are delicious treats hidden in the garbage disposal. (So disgusting) This obsession was out of control. They were up in the sink 24/7. It was stressful to the point that I was seriously hating on my kittys. I was angry at them all the time and tired of seeing gross kitty prints on my counters. I bought these alarms and the very 1st day they went off at least 3 dozen times. Every time they went off the cats jumped off the counter. I laughed so hard as the oldest cat would jump down and mean mug me as he slinked away. The 2nd day they only went off a few times... And now the only time they go off is because we forget they're on the counter and we set them off. It literally took 3 days to train the cats (obviously more for the humans). These are amazing and worth every cent! Oh and yes- they are as loud as the other reviews say they are. Don't let them go off next to your ears.

Too many false alarms
Siren frequently activates for no apparent reason. This is especially irritating when it happens in the middle of the night and the pets are confined to another part of the house. It wasn't placed near any air vents as the directions indicated so I have no explanation for the false alarms except that it is too sensitive.

Expensive but worth it
I have cats and also and also foster rescued cats. These little devices work exactly as I had hoped. My cats are now trained to stay off the kitchen counters, and I've also used them in other areas like my fireplace mantel and next to plants and other fragile items that I don't want my cats to go near. The high setting is extremely loud, so at first it's very annoying as they are being set off. Luckily, my cats quickly learned not to go near them, and now avoid the areas where I have them placed. The ones on my kitchen counters are now switched off, but every now and then, my cats will need a little refresher, and I switch them back on. Battery life is great, none have yet needed to be replaced.

Great if you want hearing damage - seriously
I only gave these 2 stars (instead of 1) because, yes, they will cause your pet to flee the area immediately BUT they will also cause hearing damage to anyone in the area just on the low setting. There is no way I would ever set this to the high volume level. My ears are literally ringing from the alarm and it's been over 5 minutes. And, one of the 2 units will not shut off unless I manually use the off switch. The one that does eventually shut off on its own feels like it takes forever. Seriously, a short maybe 3-second blast at half of the low volume would make any animal run for its' life. These are not something you could use at night unless you sleep in a separate building. They are louder than our smoke detectors and equally as annoying a sound. They are a great idea - love the sensitivity - but maybe a dial control for the volume and a choice of alarm length?

Size is a bit bigger than I was looking for
This thing works but as the others have mentioned it is LOUD, even on the low setting it can be a bit loud. Also, I wish it was like half the size. Will have to see if I can get it to fit under the kitchen cabinet to keep the puppy out of that area.

Scares the hell out of the cat
Cat was peeing everywhere and actually peed on my lift-chair hitting the controller unit and causing it to stop working. Cost $360 to have the chair fixed. I got these scramblers and now the cat doesn't come near the chair. This gadget is very loud HOWEVER you can put a small piece of duct-tape over the speaker to reduce the loudness, but it will still deter the animal. Has two loudness settings with on-off button, takes one 9 volt battery (INCLUDED), and what can I say.... IT REALLY WORKS.
